Hey,
So I have a Mazda MPV 1996....About 4 months ago I got my belts (except timing belt) replaced, then something else happened and I got it fixed (I can't remember what it was right now)...then about a month ago, my timing belt turned into shreds, so I went and got that (and my distributor cap and my oil leak) fixed. Then I drove 14 hours from Florida to move back here about 2 weeks ago...and the car has been fine

But, today, my check engine light came on; my car isnt making any weird noises and I don't feel like it's driving funny...the only thing I've done differently is (since the gas prices are so high) I put in regular instead of medium grade gas.

Any ideas? Thanks

When you get a check engine light you take it to autozone and they can plug something into your car that will give you a better idea of what's wrong. A check engine light indicates that there is an error code in your car's computer, which often has to do with pollution control systems and stuff

why were you using medium grade gas instead of 87?

when your timing belt broke, did you drive it to the place you got it fixed?

The place I got it fixed is in Florida, I lived down there that past 4 months...and when my timing belt broke, I had to get it towed...my belt was in shreds and the car wouldn't start up.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, I'll take it into one of those autozone places and have them check it out...

I was using medium grade because that's what my dad and grandfather told me to do... ?
If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear it.
Thanks again!

is the gas cap tight? i dont know how many vehicles i've had that show an error code for an evap system leak, simply because the gas cap wasnt tight, especially newer fords and some mazdas

I think her error code is a misfiring cylinder. Time to replace plugs and wires...evidently dist. cap has already been replaced.

^^ Seconded to the gas cap. It's happened to me often (I had a gas cap that didnt quite fit and didnt realize it for a bit) and several other people I know had the same thing.
