So while driving my chevy lumina there is thumping sound when going at low speeds followed by several smaller thumps. After that it goes into reverse regardless of whether its in park or what have you. After a while it will be a big thumping sound again and it works for a while until I go at a slow speed.

Whats going on, and how much am I looking at in repairs?

depends on what it is, could be a cable broken, internal tranny linkage broken, shifter boken, etc, but the adds are a million to one the transsmission is just fucked, what year, engine size and mileage are we talking about?

yep, you sir are looking at buying a new transmission to put in there, my guess would be $1000-$2000, check around at as many places as you can, or find one in a junkyard and have someone swap it out if the car isnt worth that much

after my car doing this and getting home, i found my cat has drooled out more water than he could drink in a few days and he just keeps going... can't even take him to the vet with the car not working.

(although i called the vet and they said we could give it a day to see if it keeps happening)

Not that I can afford to take him to the vet, or replace anything with the car right now... being that I'm maxed out on student loans.

And I have 5 classes tomorrow....

Any other ideas on what this could be? Where should I take this to be repaired if thats what I'm going for? I've gone to the chevy dealership in the past for a few problems, but their prices are always really high.

well there are people who have screwed me over at the dealership, and some people there who haven't, there have been people at tire king who say i need you to come in on 3 seperate days and pay the automatic free for comming in each time only to end up saying their equipment isn't working so they can't actually help, i've been to several independent mechanics who I know have screwed me over. I've had the triple A place look at my car to see what repairs it needs and had people i know check the list and they wanted me to get repairs on things my model car doesn't even have.

So I figure I'm going "take it in the ass" where ever I go, I just want to make sure that I know the exact reason why first.

none of the advice in this thread is worth a shit. take your fucking car to a privately owned TRANSMISSION SHOP and have them check it out. tell them, if its only a couple hundred to fix to go ahead and do it but anything over that to call you first cause you simply dont have 1000 to put into the car. i dont care if its true or not, just do it.
