At first glance I'm like WTF, but it definitely has some unique possibilities and I'm interested in checking it out and seeing how they implement its features in games. Discuss.
Main Controller Features
* 3D Pointing. Sensors understand up, down, left, right, forward and backward. * Tilt Sensitive. Controller can be rotated or rolled from side-to-side. * Buttons Included. Has a trigger on its backside, face buttons, and a D-Pad. * Multifunctional. Has an expansion port which can be used with different types of controller peripherals. Analog stick with two trigger buttons planned for left hand. * Wireless. Totally wire-free. Currently there are no details on the max distance, source or power, or otherwise. * Rumble Built-in. Included as a standard in all the controllers.

a.) change isn't always bad, and i'm quite certain nintendo put bajillions of dollars into research b.) it's much, much more ergonomic. you don't have to squeeze your hands together onto one little controller anymore 9/16/2005 11:10:45 AM |

i really hope that this is a joke; only one analog stick, and how is the hell are you to use the a and b buttons on the same part of the controller with the d-pad? could this mean that they will implement brand new, very obscure, and annoying control systems for games? just look at the thing - your right hand does all of the work and your left just uses the ONLY analog stick available. how will fps's fare on the revolution? nintendo will fuck themselves if they manufacture this controller. please god stop nintendo from making this stupid shit. first the ds touchpad (which is ok), now this (which seems to be not ok). 9/16/2005 11:28:59 AM |

good jesus christ READ THE ARTICLE.
the left hand doesnt just move the stick. it moves the controller.
Its a 3d fucking mouse. you move the enitre thing up, and it moves up on the screen.
For instance, in an FPS. you can control moving back and forward with the stick, and the looking around with your actual HAND. there is a trigger button on the back of the right hand as well as the A button and direction pad. There are plenty of options available for controls.
With that said, the system is compatible with GCN controllers, so if you dont like this, just use those. 9/16/2005 11:32:19 AM |

Read up on the nintendo power glove. It touted some of the exact same features.
Imagine sticking your hand into a virtual box and having your TV understand how it's moving in there. Now you're getting the idea.

this shit is dumb, one of the examples they give in an article on cnn.. is "to swing a baseball bat you swing the controller like a bat"... I'm not fucking doing that. Nintendo has tried this stuff in the past and it has never worked, the technology is not new. Now it seems they are forcing it on consumers. I believe as a direct result of this thier demographic will include few older video game players. I have no problem with the conroller, but I don't want to be forced to wave my hand around to move. It makes me think of dumbasses that turn the controller when they're playing driving games 9/16/2005 3:19:43 PM |

Quote : | "Now it seems they are forcing it on consumers." |
Quote : | "It's easy to believe that third parties could be alienated by this device. However, the good news is that Nintendo has thought of that potential drawback and taken measures to address it. The Big N has developed a conventional controller shell that, according to executives, looks more like a Wave Bird. The "pointer" remote can be inserted into this shell so that more traditional games can be enjoyed as they always have. Obviously, it will be this shell that enables players to experience Super NES and N64 games on the platform. The even better news is that because the sensory functionality of the device remains operational even when it's in the shell, games like Madden could actually be expanded. Imagine, for instance, having access to all of the controls of a standard controller plus 3D movement options. Icon passing just got a whole lot easier." |
Not to mention the system is backwards compatible with GCN controllers.
but yea, they are leaving consumers NO options 9/16/2005 3:26:08 PM |

Virtual reality has always been the next step up from conventional video games.
Nintendo is simply trying to make the next step forward.
You don't want to have to be interactive w/ your video games? Fine, go buy a PS3 or a 360.
If you want to experience something that will bring you closer to reality by submersing your own movements into a game, then go buy a Revolution. 9/16/2005 3:31:36 PM |

Not to show my age...
but I remember when the NES first came out. The d-pad with 2 buttons was a radically different than what most systems to that time used. Most used either a variation on the Atari 2600 pad or something akin to the colecovision/atari 5200 controller. So to suddenly have something that DIDNT HAVE A JOYSTICK!? that was nuts.
I think this new controller could have some very cool possibilities. Plus nintendo will be releasing plug in controllers that will mimic N64 and SNES (possibly NES) controllers as well. 9/16/2005 3:35:43 PM |

Okay, Nintendo fanboys, get it through your fucking heads that we don't want video games to be closer to reality. I play video games to do things I can't do in real life, like fly and destroy buildings and fight monsters. Yeah, it might be novel to swing the controller like a sword to make the character on-screen swing his sword, but that's not likely to make or break the game. Bullshit novelty this like could end up just being a distraction from solid game design.

Frosh...I respect your opinion but here's mine. I don't see this controller having anything to do with 'coming closer to reality'. The games will prove that -- I can promise you that. Look at nintendo's game libaries and franchises, they have tried to get as far away from that as possible. Nintenedo systems avoid shoving those endless delta storm, GTA, and racing clones games down our throats like other competetors. The other next gen systems offer zero in ingenuity other than updated graphics. Woo hoo.
I see what you are saying about going more virtual. But to pull back the remote like you were knocking an arrow in zelda and have the game understand that mechanic as far as your pace and direction going back from the screen to release -- that's just sheer excitement.
I'm not sure why you can't see the appeal. It's not like massive DDR hijinks, the motions can be scaled down to managable gestures I am sure.
You'll still have your regurgitated titles on xbox/ps2 sequel explosion, so go enjoy if you want, but you arent going to take anything away from our excitement. 9/16/2005 4:31:17 PM |

Christ, why are people so worked up over a fucking controller?
We haven't seen a single game.
We know very little about the system.
To say that it will "revolutionize gameplay" now is the same as hyping the Power Glove, Virtual Boy, CD-I, or countless other "revolutionary" failures.
And I'm with Frosh--the more advanced technology we get in our consoles, the more gameplay quality seems to decline. I spend more time playing SNES games than I do PS2 or Gamecube. 9/16/2005 11:56:09 PM |

Flying, swimming, revolutionarily large levels, and more illusion of free will. There are great and innovative games on all sides, and the GTA series is one of them, IMO.
I do think though that this new controller as being standard will bring a new crop of games with unique gameplay. As much as the haters hate it, the touch-screen on the DS does allow for some cool, new stuff that the PSP couldn't hope to touch. The PS3 and Xbox likely will have better graphics, but there will be nothing new as far as game mechanics. GTA will have larger, more detailed levels, and more versatile AI, as well as more complex and detailed environmental interaction, but you're still stuck in the static controller/display paradigm that will never change without having games beam data in to our brains. The Nintendo will still have better graphics than the current generation, and let it do a lot of neat things, but then there will be the added dimension of this new controller interface. It allows for new ways to interact with the games, while still keeping the old ones. It has another dimension of interaction that the other consoles can never have.9/17/2005 12:05:31 AM |

thats the point, they arent bragging about GIGAGLOPS or whatever, they are inventing, innovating.
nintendo has a history with this. sometimes it fails, but sometimes the technology facilitates a home run.
