I have heard most the bands listed. The problem is most people haven't. I have never understood the appeal of relating obscure bands to good music. I'm all for Sufjan Stevens, Sigur Ros, New Pornographers, Madvillain and The Decemberists, but it is ludicrous to not even mention Aqualung, The White Stripes, Gorillaz, Kanye West, Beck, The Redwalls or anything else relatively mainstream just for the fear of sounding too "mainstream."

i think its the minority of music listeners who refuse to acknowledge good mainstream music in fear of sounding less cool. a lot of people who like more obscure bands truely like them for the music and not to look cool.
