scuba steve, i am with you all the way. so far so good *knock on wood*. we bought this car used. its great 90000 miles on it. still runs good. but its a V8 AWD so gas is shitty like you said. all ive dont on this thing was swap out the front shocks and thats all.

it still runs like a champ. and ive taken it to the beach numerous times (nothin too major)

The new ones made by BMW are hot shit. As for the older ones...eh, I'd rather just have an old chevrolet or isuzu.

I don't know why the defender 90 is not popular. I think it looks a whole lot better than discovery.

defenders are popular but theyre crazy expensive bc land rover wont put airbags in them so the US wont import any more of them...my friends dad has one and the landrover in autopark has offered him more than he payed for it to buy it back

I know why Defender 90's aren't popular.

Because you can just get a new Jeep for $20k

Yeah there's a phat yellow Defender at Land Rover Cary right now selling for like $12k OVER it's original MSRP w/ like 50k miles, lol

And it will sell, for sure.

^^except it will go through 100 times tougher trails than any stock jeep.

Now you plop 10-15k in trail mods on an ol cj, and then they are about equivalent.

^ What is so special about them?

And really, what makes them better than the Wrangler Rubicons that are around ~$25k new?

^^ i find it hard to believe a defender can do any tougher trails than a stock rubicon, let alone 100 times more than a stock wrangler

I always wondered why the US only got the 2-door D90. Seems like the 4-door would have sold like hotcakes if they had brought it here, though primarily to the same crowd that now buys G-wagens tto bling out with 22" rims and $10k A/V systems.

the new ones are made by Ford, not BMW (Beemer sold them in the late 90s/early 00s I think)....the Range Rovers don't even have the 7 series engine in them anymore. Ford did all the redesigning... hence why they look so modern now. The new "LR3" (wtf? Discovery 3 would have been a better name) is built on a Ford Explorer frame.

Does anyone notice that the LR Freelander looks EXACTLY like a Ford Escape?

Don't waste your money on a Ford with a LR logo on the front...

Not to be nit-picky, but if you want to play copycat, the Freelander came first. Not in the US maybe, but the first-gen Freelander was available in Europe in '98 or '99. Didn't make it here until recently.

actually 110's ( the 4-door defender) came to this country, same time as the 90's did. not sure quite how many, but I think less than 100. Rover clubhouse in durham has one.

I was thinking of the Range Rover. Up until this year, Ford was still buying their engines from BMW since the car was designed by them.

Just a heads up, this year is the final production year in the US for the Freelanders.

They've been plagued w/ horrible reliability while their other cars have been on the up-and-up on terms of reliability. Plus, as stated, their gas milage is horrible, so people just opt for an Escape or step up to a different LR for the off-roading.

I'm not a fan of the LR3 either. Its all show. Land Rovers are made for being used offroad, or at least they used to be. Plus, those things start at like $47k....where are the mid ranged priced vehicles?

yeah...girls tend not to notice the custom alterations made to these vehicles...but they all have airlockers lifts, cut fenders and billions of other additions...

[Edited on September 26, 2005 at 4:48 PM. Reason : in which picture could they be possibly adding a sticker...hes cutting the fender more in one pic]

i mean, i think about what a stock rubicon can do

and then try and imagine what 100x that is

i will admit its pretty badass that like 80% of the world was first introduced to the automobile by land rover
(i.e. the first car that a vast majority of the world sees is a land rover)
