Quote :
"Roadside speed cameras will be redundant eventually because vehicles will automatically cop themselves for speeding.

This is the plan of the Department for Transport, which has commissioned companies to develop aircraft-style black boxes for cars.

They will record every aspect of a vehicle's performance and automatically issue a ticket every time the vehicle exceeds a speed limit.

The black boxes will be linked to central computers via the Global Positioning System so that the prevailing speed limit is known at any given point in time.

Every time a vehicle breaks the limit the black boxes will send a signal to the computer with the car registration number and a ticket will be issued automatically.

The black box will also be able to slow vehicles down by over-riding the engine management system and in the case of stolen vehicles will be able to bring them to a complete halt."

I was afraid this would come sooner or later.

Not buying a new car eventually won't be an excuse, they'll probably force people to retrofit, and make the fines so severe for removal that people won't want to take the chance.

However, I'd say this is probably at least 10 years off in the UK, and it will probably face much more legal hurdles here. If it ever gets off the ground.

why not slow them down instead of giving you 80 million tickets when you have your cruise control set on 56mph

I'd love to see the results of a lawsuit where the black box preventing speeding actually cost someone their life.

What they really need to design is a black box that can detect when you're driving like a complete ass-clown and ticket you then.

Here's the problem with this

This would require a MASSIVE infrastructure telling what speed what area is and keeping up to date when limits are changed. It also doesn't take into account

Passing legally
Changes in speed limits that are sudden
etc

The main deal was the changing speed limits that would be done by people who might forget to submit the information to the system or enter it incorrectly etc etc. It's why it never got off the ground in Nevada. It costs too much and there is too much room for error on the administrative side.

Black boxes ARE cool and i think a great idea to record the speeds people have been moving for say the past week. Especially after a wreck. I was in a wreck where someone caved in the side of my volvo and though it was my fault (I was 17), he claimed he was moving the speed limit in a parking lot. If the cop had not had common sense (there's a lot of those), he would have just written me up.

Instead he wrote the guy a wreckless and dangerous ticket and I got off scott free. Most people might not be this lucky.

OH... you were moving 45 in 15... and this guy was backing out of a parking spot... no wonder he didn't see you. Here's a $500 fine.

haha.

It could be a "black box polling system" and people who are driving within a certain radius of you can vote you off the road.

Yeah no joke,

I can just imagine moving to pass someone on a two-lane road, suddenly fuel is cut and I'm no longer passing them. Nice to meet you, oncoming traffic.

well technically you should only pass if you dont exceed the posted speed limit

but who does that?

Edit: Yep, here is the legal info:

What about places with:

+ rush hour

I'm glad the triangle doesn't have a minimum speed limits anywhere (not that I know of)... crap... getting a ticket for breaking the minimum speed limit would suck!

all roads (highways at least) have an implied minimum speed limit, even if it is not posted.

yeah, but on a 2 lane road with a short passing zone and a logging truck doing 10 under in front of you dropping debris everywhere, you need to be able to exceed the limit to pass him quickly and efficiently. otherwise the differential in speeds would get you killed by oncoming traffic.

Exactly. And you ARE allowed to exceed the speed limit when passing someone when crossing over a dotted yellow line. You are not on the highway. I even got to ask a cop that yesterday after reading the posts. He was Raleigh RPD buying stuff from us.
