my sister's birthday is tomorrow and i'm looking for something that can do the following:
i want to be able to plug in a USB pen drive to a USB SD card reader and have the sd card dump into the pen drive.

i'm looking for something other than a computer that'll do this. it's probably pointless in the end, if something like this even exists it probably costs too much... then there's the option to just take less pictures or buy a bigger sd card... but i figured i'd ask.

you could get a thumb card reader that efectively turns the card in to a thumb drive

i dont know why you are trying to do this but if that will work for what you need i have one and i like it

the idea is that the pen drive acts as a kind of storage dump, she takes a bunch of pictures (with the tiny 128 mb card she's got) at really high quality and instead of going "happy birthday, turn the resolution settings down so you can take more pictures," i'm thinking she can dump the SD card onto the pen drive to free up another 128 mb of pictures.

the smart idea is to buy a bigger card, and i'll probably do that. but i've already asked the question and since i like pointless gadgets that are only good for one thing, i'm curious to see if there's something that will do this.

the question probably still doesn't make sense.

if she's got an ipod photo or nano she could use the ipod photo adapter that'll let you plug the ipod directly into the camera and suck the photos down that way. never seen something that connects directly to the flash card itself though.

there is a product that you can plug your assorted memory cards into and it will dump into it.

then you can connect to it through usb2 and get the files off once you are done.

i think i saw it on hsn.

[Edited on September 29, 2005 at 2:25 PM. Reason : you can also get a 1gb or 2gb san disk ultra II sd card that is also a usb reader.]

look for digital media vaults. High end photo places sell them, msot are hard drive based and also do video recording. They are NOT cheap, but some let you dump up to 40 gig of ANY type of files form card to hardrive, as well as play music and the like.
