"Literary fraternity busted

Sep 29, 2005 : 9:42 am ET Herald Sun

DURHAM, N.C. -- State Alcohol Law Enforcement agents charged 18 people after raiding a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill literary fraternity accused of operating a bar out of its house.

Among those cited at the coed literature and arts fraternity known as St. Anthony Hall were the fraternity's president, Sally Enloe, 21, and Owen Fitzgerald, a 19-year old member who allegedly served as the bartender.

The bar had been open on Tuesday and Thursday nights for at least a month, ALE Agent Michael Penland said.

ALE agents received an anonymous tip and began investigating the house by setting up surveillance and using undercover officers. The bar sold seven types of beer, including $1 bottles of Pabst Blue Ribbon and $1.75 bottles of Corona, as well as $1.75 mixed drinks and $1 shots of liquor. Adding tequila to any drink cost an extra 25 cents, Penland said.

Agents seized more than 40 liters of alcohol and a cash box that contained $480, Penland said. Police and agents also cited seven people for marijuana possession and some were cited for drug paraphernalia possession.

Of the total charges, 17 were drug-related and 10 involved alcohol, Penland said.

About 30 people were in the house when the agents arrived.

"They were extremely cooperative with us once we came in," Penland said. "Nobody went to jail. Everybody was cited and released."

Enloe told the agents that the fraternity had a bar committee with three members on it, and they used the profits from the bar to pay for items and expenses at the fraternity, Penland said.
