Anyone know where I can find an online business name lookup. Are the names national or per state or what? Like if there is an "ABC Inc." in California, can I name my business "ABC Inc." in North Carolina?

To get an official response, you have to go downtown and they give you a phone number to call, at least that's the only way i know to get the phone number, they do an official lookup for you, and then you turn in the paperwork at that office to get the name.

^^ok, googed before I asked, which is what brought on the 2nd question.

there is a company in FL with the name i was going to use. which is why i was wondering about state to state.

As long as your companies aren't in the same field, it dosen't matter, and sometimes, even then. Check out the Snyder's Chip Company (both of them) in PA.

you can search for corporation names in the state of NC on the secretary of state's website.
