i'm just wondering does it help gas milage any to throw ur car(automatic) into neutral when going down hills or sitting at long lights? does it hurt the tranny to do it?

im pretty sure youll cause more trouble with the tranny than saving gas. in the long run.

but hell i dont know.

Instead of accelerating slowly, it'll help to throw your car into neutral at every light, rev the rpm's to the limiter, and then throw it in drive. This way, you don't waste any gas getting slowly up to speed.

i wouldn't think keeping it in neutral while stopped would do anything. just coasting to a stoplight (rather than racing to it and slamming on your brakes) or down hill will help your gas mileage (not sure on if actually shifting to neutral would be better than coasting.)

Think about this: when you are in gear and you let off the gas completely, the computer actually stops firing the injectors until the engine's rpm's drop below a certain level.

You don't save much at all, if anything.

overrun fuel cut most likely doesn't occur in situations such as these, and less likely with an automatic. We went through this discussion a couple weeks ago I won't argue anymore. Rolling in neutral in an automatic probably isn't the best thing in the world to do to it either. The pump isn't turning as fast as it would be if the rpms were up where they would be in gear.

basically, as usual, ^^^ is right. deceleration fuel tables input less fuel than idle...

Use your torque converter, that is why you have one.
