So let's say my motherboard has two pcie 16x slots running dual video cards (in sli mode). Let's also say my motherboard has an addition pcie 1x slot. can I stick another video card in there for multi monitors?

have you looked at the PCI 1x slot its like half an inch long lol. What you should do is take out the SLI switch and flip it over to normal so you hvae two pci-e vid cards running four monitors.

You can run 4 monitors in SLI mode. You don't need to un-SLI them. In fact, you'll get better performance while in SLI mode, even with multiple monitors.

you must disable SLI

SLI is pulling two cards for ONE video output.

I was wrong about the SLI. My mistake. When nVidia initially release information about SLI they said that you'd be able to run 2 monitors in SLI mode, but they've since changed that.

In theory, you should be able to run up to 4 monitors, then change to SLI mode under the display settings menu and drop to one monitor for gaming. A reboot shouldn't be required... in theory.

technically speaking, you can absolutely plug in a pcie video card into an x1 slot. just need a physical adapter. would it be worth doing, no not really.

^I agree, but a reboot is required presently. There are rumors that a restart won't be needed with the next driver release.

you can find an old pci (without the e) graphics card. It won't run games, but if all you're trying to do is run a second monitor for chat or something, it'll work fine.
