There are players that play both formats. A disc cannot be both formats. 10/12/2005 11:11:42 PM |

as you can see, vast majority plays both. most realistic solution is buying a new dvd player if yours doesn't.
[Edited on October 12, 2005 at 11:23 PM. Reason : 84.47% play both] 10/12/2005 11:21:09 PM |

pryderi... You are confused..
First off...as stated before, a player can be both +R and -R. A disc must be one or the other.
Basically, this disc issue is a repeat of the VHS/Beta battle back in the 80's. Now, just like then, Sony wanted to corner the market with their own way of doing things. Instead of just dumping one format however, DVD burners were developed to be compatible with both.
If you have an older DVD player, the -R is likely to be more compatible. The newer players (both stand alone and DVD drives in a PC) are usually compatible with both formats today.
And no..you do not have to look for the -R DVD in Blockbuster. You are also not renting BURNED...or recordable... DVD's at Blockbuster. The process that goes into making a DVD like one you would rent at Blockbuster is totally different than either the +R and -R. 10/13/2005 1:38:53 AM |

seriously, burning dvd's or anything about burning dvd's is simple enough to teach an elementary school kid
1. there are 2 kinds of formats that pretty much play in anything 2. download dvdshrink and nero 3. buy dvd's either + or - 4. burn movies
thats about it 10/13/2005 2:33:07 AM |

I have learned not to underestimate what people do not know when it comes to computers. And sadly..the ones who know the least are usually afraid to ask for fear of being made to feel dumb. Even if the Op is kidding, I would be willing to bet that somebody reading this thread will not know the answer and be grateful to have it explained to them. 10/13/2005 3:29:56 AM |

That's what I wanted to know. I've transferred video tapes over to DVD for people, and if they have a dvd player that only plays DVD+R, I have to copy it over to that format.
