So I have a 10 inch, non-shielded 180 RMS watt, subwoofer. what should be the good distance to keep it away from my computer?

I have heard 1-2 feet is about right.

is it that big of a deal to have it as close to your computer as possible? just throw it under your desk somewhere in the corner... subs sound better in the corners anyways from my experience

i think he's worried about the strength of the magnet toasting his HD.

that said, i have no clue if it actually would. i'm suprised your computer sub isn't shielded.

A subwoofer is not going to affect your hard drive in any way. The magnet just isn't that strong.

^ Actually, most aren't shielded...there are no practical and economical benefits of magnetically shielding a subwoofer that isn't supposed to be placed close to electronics anyway.

yeah, even if the sub isn't shielded, the PC case and the metal around the HDD will shield it fine. I'd say 1-2' is more than fine if you want to be certain.

okay its the z 5500 sub, so it really actually does have a pretty big magnet (non-shielded which I cannot believe since it is $$$$)....so far people have been sugguesting about 1-2 ft. I have a pair of 74gb raptors I would really prefer to not fuck up.

That said my space is definitely limited under the desk, so I was just checking to see what a reasonable safe distance would be considering the amount of space.

one time i wasnt paying attention and used a laptop directly on top of two 12" subs for a good amount of time and didnt ever notice any problems

maybe i was just lucky?

Yeah I would assume you would have to let it sit there for a bit before it could fuck up your hd, from the magnet anyways.

If you had the subs on the vibrations could have also done damage depending on your specific laptop and how it dampens the vibrations.

you'd need a very very strong magnet to even try to slightly penetrate the hard drive casing...

I am talking more than 10,000 Gauss magnets.
