I think the movie doesn't look too bad, I'll get it on Netflix. I am not much of a Gyllenhaal fan as much as people who blow their load over Donnie Darko though. I find him slightly annoying.

The script is hella good. Reminded me a lot of Full Metal Jacket, but looks at what happens when you train and encourage men to kill, then don't give them the chance to do it.

It doesn't really criticize the war. They take their potshots at it at times, but I wouldn't say this is an out and out criticism of the Gulf war, its tone is really kind of a Full Metal Jacket/M*A*S*H hybrid. It does have its M*A*S*H moments, but its really just about these hardcore, balls to the wall marines trying to keep their sanity when all they want to do is kill some people, and they can't. Shoot, the fighting doesn't even start until Act III and its gonna be bitchin.

I'm suprised they actually made a movie out of this book. It's good in the sense that it shows the grittiness of the military lifestyle, but I could imagine that some members of the USMC may not be happy with the portrayal of the service.

I still think of him in his role in October Sky. (And because I have yet to see anything else he has been in - this will be the first movie since then.)
