according to a study by Wired magazine, 40% of internet traffic is through bittorrents

half of it being porn, the other half being movies/tv shows

i'm willing to bet i have more experience with people being arrested due to piracy - and yes it's more rare than a fine - but it does happen

im pretty sure you have to do more than just download a couple of torrents to go to jail.

like downloading mass amounts of DVD's and selling them online.

I got a warning letter last semester about bittorrent usage but nothing ever came of it. I've dropped the habit, though, just to be safe.

I don't use BitTorent at all.

I think it's use should be banned in apartment complexes...I mean isn't bandwidth sharing a co-operative responsiblity?

it wasn't that I was using it a lot, it was that I downloaded something that MPAA was apparently tracking.

Got a nice little email from someone on campus responsible for dealing w/ this.
Did the whole "hallelujah, I'm a changed man" song and dance.
Didn't hear any more from them, but I'm not planning on trying my luck again.

that's like saying 99.99% of people that get caught for drugs only get a fine b/c the people that get caught with everyday shit are much more numerous than the ones that get caught at the higher up level - thus we can conclude that almost all people that get arrested for drugs just pay a fine

All I have to say is that if you really gotta pirate media...why not just go the traditional route and make copies of already pirated media...using BitTorent is such a drag on my bandwidth.

i have to agree w/ DoubleDown on this one. I used bittorrent to pirate some shit in my time, but it's also how I usually wind up getting my ISOs for any linux distro I want to test out.

I could use a ftp server and be at the mercy of 1 server (or x # of mirrors) or use a distributed setup like bittorrent. For a 700 meg download, guess which I'd prefer?

In the case of Linux ISOs, I doubt any BitTorrent seed could be faster than a local mirror...especially when you wanna download Redhat/Fedora.

and in the case of smaller distros not mirrored around here? Or not-so-small distros in the same situation? Knoppix being my case in point. I'll admit I didn't actually try the VA server they offer, but I remember getting good results from their bittorrent download.

For the most part, all I'm really saying is that they both have their uses.

torrent, kaza, p2p, your momma. I don't care what you want to call it. Its piracy and carries the same penalty.

three-month deferred jail sentence

deferred or not its sitll jail time for something you claim cannot be given. and because A) his age and B) state not federal court he didn't have a worse sentence.

^the bobbing of their parents heads when they came in to pick up the rif raf is unmistakable for inidan. sorry dude.

^^^ eh, I wouldn't argue it, man. It was jail time as part of the sentence, even if it was suspended to go 'easy' on the kid.
