Or should I say muffler-loving? Muffler is actually the part that makes your exhaust quieter. Anyhow, you should not be writing for a newspaper, let alone writing about cars. You have the reasoning skills of a twelve year-old, and your composition makes me beleive you have not completed even a 100-level English course. And for God's sake, if you are going to be writing about something you know nothing about, at least do your basic research. Making an outline before you write your article would not be a bad idea either.

This article makes the "farting muffler" -hating thread from a few weeks ago sound like a fucking schientific journal piece.

Mufflers, motorbikes and tailpipes, oh my! Custom exhaust can come in any shape, form and sound nowadays. There might be some of you who do not understand what custom exhaust is, although I am sure you have heard it at some point. Because of this, I feel it is essential to establish a universal definition before we proceed any further. Let me also inform you all that I am no expert on the mechanical specifications of exhaust, we shall leave that to the mechanical engineers -- it seems that there is certainly no shortage of them around here. Thus I am not going to talk about the mechanical specifications of custom exhaust but rather the comical and obnoxious sounds that comes with it.

To back track just a little bit, I previously said it was necessary to establish a universal definition of custom exhaust because there are some who might not have the slightest clue as to what I am talking about. However, before we venture any further into the "bad-to-the-bone" custom-exhaust realm (thunder and lightning) it is necessary to discuss simple exhaust. Apparently the days of the common, quiet single tailpipes have come to an end. That weak thing is for Losers (with a capital L.) Even if you have the newest Ferrari money can buy, it still sucks compared to the sweet Dodge Neon with an exhaust pipe the size of a cannon. The single tailpipe is for Ma and Pa's Ford Taurus, not your gnarly new ride, dude.

Forgive me, I have sidetracked here and not efficiently stated what simple exhaust is. Exhaust, in its proper and intended form, was simply meant to be the system by which waste gases or air is expelled from an engine. Note, it does not say anything about being the system that will make your car the loudest or resultantly the coolest or fastest.

What is most important about custom exhaust is how cool and fast people will think your car is once you have it. Custom exhaust is by far a statement above anything else. If you are one of them "good ol' boys" and people can't tell by your camouflage hat or cowboy boots, then they will certainly know by the two big tailpipes you've got on the back of your "jacked up" Z71. I don't mean to offend any of you Ford fans because obviously your truck is built Ford tough. Sorry Dodge, and any other truck-producing company, I have not enough words to share with you. To continue, if you are one of those "street racers" and people didn't know it, perhaps because you were going so fast they couldn't see you, then they will certainly now know it because of the sonic boom that you just produced on Cates Avenue. Certainly these are not just the only two types of statements that come from having custom exhaust, but they certainly seem to be the most common or popular.

In the first sentence I included motorbikes and now it is the time to expand upon them. I am not going to write as if I were an expert in this subject because I am not. The following sentences are based upon thoughts that I have gathered from simply watching, or rather listening, around campus and elsewhere. Motorbikes are fast and as a result they are dangerous, even more so since the rider does not have any protection except perhaps a helmet, but that results in an automatic deduction of 10 cool points. Motorbikes are loud to begin with, I know that, you don't have to prove that by riding around in first gear and revving the engine, that only startles people and makes them angry. Or it just makes them laugh. In fact, revving the engine to higher rpm's is not going to make me think your bike is faster than it really is. I could drive around in a Geo Metro and rev the engine and make just as much noise.

My point is -- please stop. I am asking you because not only is this distracting when you pass my dorm on Cates Avenue but also when I can still hear you pull onto I-40 a good mile or two away. Cars, motorbikes and trucks go fast, even regular tailpipes could tell us that.

Not to mention the blanket stereotyping and "definition" of exhaust systems. That's why when I was at state and read the technician every day, the only thing worthwhile most of the time was the crossword and sports.

He does have a point that revving your shit in stop-and-go campus traffic is lame. It's too bad that his lack of knowledge and writing skill obscures that.

Yeah I see what you mean, but he should have done a whole lot of research on exhaust sytems before writing that article. A lot of the "mufflers" he's complaining about aren't even technically mufflers, they're glass-packs. Uneducated and biased writings don't bother me on messageboards and shit, but that sumbitch got published! Damnit that pisses me off.

Personally, revving is a lot easier than trying to find the horn button without looking down. My hand is already there and the dumbass in front of me is looking at the floor. Also, some may agree, some may not, but I don't have a stereo and I personally find the sounds emitted from my 'mufflers' to be very musical. You don't hear me bitching about every time a car drives by with their windows down and they are listening to music I don't like and it is loud.

The above was subjective, this is not. Motorcycle engines have low inertia and they don't make much power down low. My motorcycle has a dry, multiplate clutch that can be a pain in the ass. I personally would rather rev a little bit and actually move forward rather than stall out in the middle of traffic (which I have done).

I was going to write a response to the paper but I figured that at NCSU, there are plenty of people more knowledgeable than me to address this issue and I am sure they will. Hmmmm, maybe he should have thought of that...

WELL GOD DAMMIT, I'M GONNA RIDE AROUND IN FIRST GEAR REVVING MY STRAIGHT PIPED Z71 TO PISS HIM OFF DOUBLE TIME. IF THAT V-8 RUMBLE DOESNT MAKE THE HAIR STAND UP ON THE BACK OF YOUR NECK, YOU HAVE NO PENIS.

i do however understand the fartbox fourbanger part though, thats annoying, especially the ones that rattle

I knew GM was onto something with that Metro. Here I thought it was all about fuel efficiency and economy but Warren, our favorite staff writer over at the Technician, has now informed me that the Geo Metro will produce the same effects as a sport bike when the engine is revved. I salute you Warren, I never realized the technology to rev to over 15,000 RPM was disguised in such an ugly piece of shit as the Metro. Damn, I'm dropping out of school and going to study under Warren, he knows his shit...

Please rev your engines when you pass his dorm on Cates Avenue. I bet he'll write a following article how people are annoying him even more. HAHA

btw, 1st gear on a bike is very very short. On my bike at 25mph that denotes about 5k on the rev. Hardly revving my engine since it redlines at 13k, but it sounds fast! right? lol I even have a carbon fiber full exhaust system. oh yeah.

Don't make me go straight pipe and run up and down on cates avenue.
