I lost my voice on monday.... haven't been talking since then (well except when I absolutely have to)... it keeps getting worse and worse for some reason.
I work tomorrow, i need a voice to work, right now I'm at a whisper.
does anyone know a quick fix... I've heard actors having some strange solutions to make their voice come back for when they need it... but I don't remember what they are.
I've been drinking hot tea non stop... all I've been eating is soup, particularly chicken noodle... I've been sleeping as much as I can afford to with school/studies... I've done the honey in tea.
Someone suggested alcohol... but, I dunno.
I'm willing to try almost anything. I can't afford not to work tomorrow, especially since I am suppose to close both shifts.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wouldn't hot liquids (tea and soup) irritate your throat even more and slow down the healing process?

i lost my voice like a week before final exams one semester and i needed my voice to study with my groups.... i tried a bunch of stuff but very little worked. gargling listerine helped to numb it a lot. it's basically the same thing as those sore throat sprays....

bleh.
and no, I wait until the tea has cooled down a bit
If it burns my tongue with a tiny taste then I am not about to guzzle it.
I always forget how much I like to talk until I can't do it!

how about me with this terrible sore throat and cough...there is not really anything else happening with me other than those two (the sore throat came first then the cough)

lemon tea sweetened with honey....or straight honey. I lost my voice once and it helped a lot.

well, I had to stop by work to let them know i have no voice (so i don't get chewed out for waiting till that last minute)... and they told me whiskey.
said that if that didn't work at least I'd feel good
the guy at the abc store told me to put honey in it to help coat my throat... and the whiskey would at least help me get knocked out so that I can rest (maybe I look like the person that doesn't rest?)
So I came home and had three shots of whiskey... and now I am ruining my tea with it.
I think I should take my dogs out before I'm completely drunk... at least I can still type

You can make what's called a hot toddy....not sure what is in it but I'm sure a google search would do the trick. Apparently it has whiskey in it.

the best thing that will make you have your voice back immediately is buying the fruit called Quam or Guam...I am not sure of the spelling....then you take the seeds out and dissolve it in water and drink it. My grandmother used to make that for us back in the Middle East....it works wonders....if you need more info you can ask me or pm me.
oh well you might not be sick anymore anyways!!! by now!!

bleh.
I still don't have a voice. :-(
the whiskey only made me drunk... I didn't even get a full solid sleep! I kept waking up. Damn abc store people don't know what they're talking about
So, I guess I am gonna try and get some mint tea... someone suggested that.... and I'm crious about persian qute's fruit.
and I guess I'm gonna go to the doc too.

The hot toddy formula (now please note, I am not advocating drinking if you are underage), but- this was taught to me by a Texan and it works (most of the time)

1/2 bourbon, 1/2 water. Heat in a sauce pan on the stove. Add honey and lemon to taste. When you have it like you want it, put in mug and drink it. Then go to sleep

You should have your voice back the next day or two. You can repeat a second night if necessary.

If it doesn't work, get to a Doc, see what's going on and see if Zithromax would be an appropriate perscription. The only time the toddy didn't work was when nothing was working (and what I had was turning into walking pneumonia). Zithro did the trick.

you may as well just get some nyquil and sleep as much as possible, that way youre getting some rest and youre not tempted to use your voice - when awake, drink hot liquids and soups, and liquor isnt a bad idea - thats what my dad does when hes sick, lol

zithromax is for infections and stuff right? It doesn't work on me if it's what I think it is. Augmentin is the only thing that works for me if I have an infection.
But... I might try the toady if my voice is still this bad tonight. I can't believe I've had this shit for 4 days! and my docs too busy until saturday, and I can't afford to go to the clinic (my health insurance doesn't cover those, only the ER, which i am not going to for a sore throat!).
Oddly, though my ears are starting to hurt and I'm finally getting a stuffy nose... don't ya think those things are suppose to come first??
As for not talking... I don't have to worry about that, I live alone and my managers told me not to bother comming in today. And I've been doing the hot liquid thing... and had been taking nyquil until last night when I replaced it with half a bottle of whiskey.

do you have allergies? any drainage? what happened before you lost your voice? (ie did you go camping and sleep outside last weekend or go to a concert/bar where you were yelling a lot or in a really smoking atmosphere where it was either cold or you were yelling, etc.....)

this must be going around. two people i know and then it happened to me last week (tuesday). first, my throat was horribly sore. no blisters or anything like with strep but really red and raw. and then i started coughing...(probably wednesday night) and it got worse and worse til i felt like i was hacking up my lungs (this past monday and tuesday). yesterday i coughed less and then today i'm much better. during the last week, no drainage, no stuffy nose, just sore throat and coughing. BUT, now (this morning) i started having some nasty drainage and from the looks of what i can cough up, it is definitely a sinus infection. yay. guessing the first was just a cold/flu type virus. i just took a shitload of nyquil and then finally this week some of that theraflu nasty ass crap.

my bro's wife lost her voice the day of their wedding--CRAZY!
she refrained from talking all day...and went back and sat in a steam room a couple times throughout the day
she got her voice back just in time to read her vows

i did nothing prior to having a sore throat.
I do have allergies... I take perscription stuff for it... I was at work on Saturday and just felt like I was gonna start loosing my voice, throat just felt weird... then it was halfway there monday morning... then gone.
I don't know anyone with any sore throat symptoms... so, I dunno.
hehe, the cat sneezed in my face a lot prior to... but we've already decided that has nothing to do it

didnt read the whole thread so if someone else mentioned this, then disregard but:

I used to lose my voice almost every time I got a sore throat as a kid/teenager...my mom always used honey and alum and it worked without fail every time. In case you don't know, alum can be found with the cooking spices in the grocery store...it's very metallic/bitter tasting, but it works.

take advil

the antiinflammatory might help

you need to reduce the swelling of your vocal cords, but unfortunately its not terribly easy to do and home remedies arent THAT effective, and they dont last long

just gonna have to wait till it resolves on its own

but if its bacterial it could take a while, how red is your throat? any pus?

if its viral, just gonna have to let it run its course.

sounds like you are doing all you can do really.

but as long as your vocal cords are swollen you wont be able to talk very well

the ear thing sounds like an infection..............so go to the doc, most ERs have a clinic for minor things like this so, its worth getting checked out...........least you will feel better

wish i had an otoscope...........havent seen an ear infection yet.........wanna see what that looks like

blar.
it's still here!!! five days in a row. and something along with it is starting to make me extremly sleepy... and now it feels scratchy.
I've tried everything that everyone suggested (minus the alum).... and I suppose that if I didn't have a doctors appointment tomorrow morning then i would just go to the ER clinic... but since I have an appointment I'm gonna save myself the wait. Besides, I don't really feel bad (other than being exhausted, which is weird since I've been sleeping more than usual)... I just have no voice and the throats a bit scratchy.

do not whisper. that is acutually worse for your voice then anything when you are sick. Just if you have to talk, talk in a low voice, but not a whisper.

gargle with warm water and salt. I've had bouts of voice loss and it sucks but I'll also second the hot toddys too.
