well, i am VERY much a pragmatist, so ideologues make me scratch my head sometimes. i've seen MathFreak say (and i'm paraphrasing, here) "well, i don't really like this idea at all, but it fits my ideology, so i'll support it."
i think that's the wrong way to look at things, but that's something different than what is (or rather, isn't) going on in the minds of the people i mentioned.
and i see a definite distinction between the attitude of 0EP111 and JerryGarcia. 0EP basically just disagrees with some American policies (albeit in a rather venemous way sometimes), but he'll still give credit where credit is due. i think he's probably a pretty decent guy. JerryGarcia is a dirtbag, and I get the feeling that he pretty much hates and looks down on everything between Cape Hatteras and Honolulu. 11/3/2005 12:49:09 PM |

dude, THABIGL and theDuke are pratically on the same side of the aisle. So is salisburyboy, and I think xyzabc might be as well (haven't checked his stuff out recently, but I make that assertion based on his "in the darkness" statement). Granted, salisbury boy is so far to the right of the aisle that he's like outside the fucking building, he's still to the right of the aisle.
Pryderi and JG are DEFINITELY on the left side of the aisle, but, given duke's assertion that he appreciates logic, they are logically consistent with the rest of his list of people who he claims don't think logically, or at least that they don't argue as such...
Quote : | "seems like pyderi at least draws from well-known media sources" |
only, he really doesn't. He may quote the NYtimes every now and then, but when he does, he does the exact same thing that salisburybot does when quoting the NYtimes: he takes one or two phrases in the article and blows them out of proportion and ignores the context of the rest of the article. The rest of the time, pryderi is quoting sources which are doing the same thing.]11/3/2005 10:22:08 PM |

out of my original 7, i count 3 people i'd categorize as part of the "left", 2 from the "right", and one from another planet (who was, once upon a time, a nutjob member of the extreme right...and really, i'd still categorize him as part of the right, but he's so far out there that he makes your average Wyoming militiaman look like Dennis Kucinich)
^pryderi is second only to salisburyboy, who is indeed on his own special tier. a couple of the others are very close behind, though.

basically, my intention here was to serve as an intervention of sorts. some of these people probably know that they aren't in the political mainstream, but maybe it'll do them some good to see their names on a short list with established loons. i mean, these are the people who, when i see that a thread was posted by them, i rarely even click on it.
sometimes it helps to get an outside point of view.

I know my ideas might seem kind of out there, but that's only because they are so distantly in the future. I don't want America to be communsit right now, I just wish for us to continue the progressive path. My short term goals are no different than that of most other democrats.
I've always considered myself the most real of realists.

That's absolutely the right way to look at things. Albeit presented in a somewhat cartoonish form. I may be wrong to not like some things, or at least to actively dislike them. The only way to check if I'm wrong is to step back to core principles that I believe are true and see if my disliking of something violates those principles.
There is a difference between saying "Hell, yeah, I'll believe in this bullshit cuz that's what us <insert a group name> are supposed to believe" and "OK, it appeared weird at first, but now that I've figured it out it actually is normal, and I should accept it".
For example, I once was a proponent of making foreigners learn the language. Cuz it's "nice" when people around you don't say "durka durka durka" or "abadubadubadu". I was wrong and I realized it.11/3/2005 10:48:09 PM |

so yeah, thats why you are on the list. Some people also fought for many years to continue segregation, but that sure as hell don't make segregation right... If you want to attack communism, then you need to do more than say "OMFG WE HATED IT FOR YEARS! ^ I really hate communism, so speak for yourself. I don't hate it because of the totalitarianism it is usually associated with, I hate it because it sounds like common-sense to people which then attempt to apply it and every single time they just end up making life a little more miserable here on planet earth. 11/3/2005 11:35:05 PM |
aaronburro Sup, B 53063 Posts user info edit post |
yep. thats a good reason to hate it. but, what you hate is not really communism. You hate the mis-application of communism which almost always seems to occur when communism is attempted. 11/3/2005 11:37:44 PM |
