my pc has been overheating for last 2 months (comp power down when i run high graphic program - game). now the monitor is black screen. i took all the cards and drive and replaced power supply, ram and graphic card. still black screen. i am guessing either CPU or motherboard is gone. how can i test which one is bad? thanks for help in advance. 11/4/2005 2:34:34 PM |

we'll need to know the CPU type/socket then you'll need to find someone with the same equipment brave enough to let you test a possibly defective (and destructive) part on their equipment.
it's a big risk to take. if said part is damaged in a certain way it could kill whatever part is used to test it.
If the machine is more than a year or two old, I'd suggest just getting a new board/CPU. Also, odds are much more likely that the Motherboard is bad. Most CPU's these days can run without heatsinks and not cook themselves. they're designed not to overheat but to throttle their speed down to safe levels to keep cool. so if you can't find anyone to test with, replace the board first. 11/7/2005 1:49:33 AM |
