how do i merge multiple workbooks that did not come from the same original workbook?

open up both workbooks
right click on one of the worksheet tabs
click on Select all Sheets
right click on one of the worksheet tabs
click on Move or Copy
pick the workbook you want to move the worksheets to

and as qntmfred pointed out, you're moving worksheets, not workbooks. Workbooks contain worksheets
