Went to get my truck inspected and the check engine light didn't come on when he turned the key, so it didn't pass.

I checked the fuse and it seems to be fine. My best guess is that it is the bulb. Anyone ever changed one of these before? Does it require removing the whole freaking dash or can I do it myself?

Any suggestions?

thanks

2000 ranger

checked the fuse that it showed in the diagram in the repair manual
it showed the check engine light leading to Fuse 10 - 10Amp

There was a 7.5Amp fuse in there but my dad said that shouldn't make a difference and he knows more about cars than I do.

Are you the original owner? Have you ever seen the check engine light come on?

No, i'm not the original owner and I really don't know if I've ever seen it come on.

But I got it inspected last year and it passed, so unless this is a new thing they are testing for, I guess it has worked before.

next you should check all fuses. if indeed it is a burnt out bulb, you will have to remove some dash parts in order to remove the instrument cluster (to access the bulb)

I would say skankinande is the resident late model ranger expert here, you may want to PM him and ask him to look in this thread.

i had to replace instrument cluster lights in my '94 ranger a few times (when i still had it)..

its a PITA.. pretty straightforward, but seemed to take forever (a couple hours)
