The South got some economic and even military assistance (a couple of ships, I think) from England and France. We got a really good deal on Alaska from the Russians, but it wasn't quite a good enough deal to be a handout. 11/10/2005 6:03:26 PM |

^see, i never knew that about the ships from eng/france for the south
i read somewhere that like only one or two countries in the world recognized the CSA as an actual country 11/10/2005 6:18:31 PM |

I don't remember the details, but there was a fairly big international incident about it. England gave (or sold dirt cheap or on credit) a couple of pretty good warships to the Confederacy, and (if memory serves, and it probably doesn't) we sank them on the high seas. We got pissed that they were aiding the enemy and called it an act of war, they got pissed that we sank two ships that were still technically theirs...then we set Georgia on fire and Lee was like, "I'm too old for this shit" and everyone forgot about it. 11/10/2005 6:26:48 PM |

I keep saying "we" like you and I are both citizens of the United States and not the CSA, France, or England. 11/10/2005 6:34:35 PM |

The CSA and its brilliant ideas has managed to hold us back a good fifty years, and as a proud son of the Great State of North Carolina I can gladly say I hate them for it. 11/10/2005 6:54:24 PM |

The CSA would have lagged all of Europe, Russia, and the US. Japan was about to catch up, too. If Russia was 50 years behind Western Europe, the CSA would have been 75 years behind.
I'm glad they lost, NC would probably be no better than Mexico these days. 11/10/2005 7:06:52 PM |

also, the emancipation proclamation effectively prevented any country from supporting the South.
so much to the fact that Henry Adams said, "the emancipation proclamation has done more for us than all our former victories and all our diplomacy."

ever driven through South Carolina and seen Maurice's BBQ?
I want to meet that fucker one day and punch him in his gut for advocating making the south into a shithole. He has all these books in that place advocating the CSA and Jeff Davis and all that shit. 11/10/2005 7:17:55 PM |

basically the confederacy got ships through agents that werent officialy ships of war. it was pretty obvious thats what they were for but it allowed the british government to say it was obeying its neutrality laws. Many of the famous ships from the south were from british ship yards (the georgia, florida, alabama, shenendoah for a few examples). Before the confederacy captured naval yards they relied on these british shipyards. this led to disagreements after the war (see the alabama claims) and britian had to pay the us millions of dollars.
although the confederacy never fully proved its causus beli to the international community they were in a sense recognized as a legitimate power when england and france were forced to declare their neutrality
another way the confederacy received aid was through bonds, some of which were subsidized or had junk clauses. this effort however was damaged when the confederate government started a cotton emargo in an attempt to force british intervention 11/10/2005 7:20:30 PM |

i always think that this is an interesting point president jefferson davis almost issued a similar proclamation but many lobbyists opposed it. lincoln was only able to do so because it had no real effect
