...who would not have the new iPod"
-- Michael Lucas, founder of gay porn media company, Lucas Entertainment Inc., who also acts in his company's films
[]
Anyway, it is from this article which says that the new iPods and cell phones will revolutionize the mini-porn industry in the US!
(It is already multi-million dollar business in Europe and Japan)

Looking at the current evolution of the iPod, I'm pretty convinced that several generations from now, the iPod will look something like this:

I refuse to buy an iPod. I used to want one because they looked cool and everyone else had one, but then I asked myself why. It's not worth spending three and four hundred dollars on an mp3 player. Why not just get a CD player that plays mp3 CDs? So much more cost effective. And who actually has 10000 songs anyway? 11/15/2005 4:33:10 PM |

Now, I understand all the arguments about owning an iRiver or Dell DJ instead of an iPod (not that I agree with them, but I certainly understand them), but I don't even come close to comprehending why someone would shoot down mp3 players in general and opt a Discman instead. That's just pointless. (except for cost) 11/15/2005 4:36:02 PM |

Ralph Whittington, a former curator at the Library of Congress dubbed "the king of porn" for amassing a carefully catalogued collection of adult magazines, videos and DVDs, said in a phone interview that he does not get the trend.
"I can't see anybody wanting to watch while they're sitting at the airport," Whittington said. "I just don't see how it's going to be all that popular."" |
Last time I was at the airport, waiting during a 3 hour layover, I found myself thinking, "Damn, I really wish I had some porn right now to help pass time time."

Because of the cost. Why spend two, three, or four hundred dollars on an mp3 player from Apple or Dell when you can buy a Discman that plays mp3 CDs for about 80 dollars? They both do the same thing, so whats the point of paying more money? It makes no sense. BTW, a CD player that plays mp3s is an mp3 player.11/15/2005 4:44:21 PM |

Because the last time I sat down on the bus while carrying 7000 songs around with me in my pocket, I ended up with a severed artery and a pile of broken CDs.
Then I got an mp3 player and didn't lose any more blood.

I don't think we have to be so literal about this. We know what we're talking about here.
But seriously, convenience is worth a lot of money. Not having to carry CDs, not having to protect CDs, not having to select CDs, not having to change CDs, not having to live with the restrictions of sequential playback, not having to have a bulky player that doesn't fit in my pocket, not having to burn a whole new CD when I want to add just a couple of new songs ... all of these are worth $$.
How much $$?
Well, the answer there determines if you buy an iPod or a Rio.11/15/2005 4:51:47 PM |

I was anti-iPod (really just because EVERYONE was hopping on them, especially those who seemed it was just to "fit in"), until I looked at the market.
I did have like $200 worth of gift cards for Best Buy which swayed me to go with them.
However, when looking at the players available through Best Buy, I could go with a 30-40GB player from someone else, or a 60GB player from Apple. Looked at my music folder and saw it was already 30GB with a lot more CDs that I'd like to own. That made the decision for me.
And as soon as I found an alternative to iTunes, I switched to the alternative because iTunes just sucks in my opinion.
I did not purchase for the "cool" factor. I'm not the type to follow "norms" or want to broadcast the fact that I'm carrying a device with a good resale value. Only time it's seen in public is when I change tracks (inside a full case that covers the buttons when it's in my pocket).
There are some things I don't like about the UI. I really wish you could jump to a specific letter when scrolling through artists/albums/songs first. I have 6,700 songs on my iPod alone and sometimes it would just be nice to jump to a letter and then scroll instead of scrolling through everything.

I'm just the opposite.
Although it killed me to give money to Apple, I bought an iPod because I thought it was the superior product.
I was wrong-- it sucks.
It has compact, stylish frame... which I never see because its crappy finish necessitates a bulky cover.
It doesn't let me move music from the iPod to my computer without the use of 3rd party software.
I can't use Napster.
iTunes sucks.
The headphones are so bad I'm not sure why Apple even bothers.
Battery life is shorter than comparable mp3 players.
etc... 11/15/2005 5:15:25 PM |

Don't hold your breath.
Other players are worse.
Except for Iriver.
Which has the most shittastic UI ever on an otherwise excellent player. 11/15/2005 5:18:52 PM |

tl, I think this is just a difference of how much we value convenience. I don't mind carrying around a few CDs but you obviously do (that's probably because I take my bookbag nearly everywhere I go). You're the first person I've met that has had over 1500 songs. You must have a huge music collection or spend alot of time downloading. One mp3 CD holds about 200 songs. I have about six hundred songs so I would need only about 3 CDs. To me HD based mp3 players are overpriced and most of what you are paying for is the name. 11/15/2005 10:11:48 PM |

I don't know anyone who use their computer to listen to music that has less than 2000 songs. I've got 4100 on my computer right now, and that's about 1/3rd of my record collection. 11/16/2005 12:51:15 AM |

Why are these people who obviously don't listen to much music saying there's no need for mp3 players? No, if you only have 100 songs, you won't want to spend a few hundred dollars on an mp3 player. My 20GB player is filled to the brim with rips of albums I actually own - I could probably fill up a 60 with all of the stuff I've downloaded or could borrow from friends. Now between the choices of carrying a $300 compact player or a $50 discman and a huge book filled with ~$2500 worth of discs it's a pretty easy decision. 11/16/2005 3:08:28 AM |

seriously. if you dont listen to music, don't get a hard drive based mp3 player. Protostar is obviously one of these people.
This argument is like asking why use a cd player when you can use a tape player. I've got 3000 songs, fyi. A cd of mp3s won't even last one long trip, and that's assuming I listen to all the songs the way through. Nevermind the fact that you can't see track titles or have them organize or anything. I can't believe anyone has to tell your backward ass this. Rest assured, Protostar, you are in a minority -- a minority of people who are dumb. 11/16/2005 4:06:16 AM |

Of course you're going to need 3rd party software to get music off the thing. It was originally built not to allow it.
Check out SharePod. Can transfer music from/to your iPod and it runs from the iPod itself. Hell, it's even got a player built into it.
That program, along with EphPod (installed on machines I own) is what I use instead of iTunes (I feel it's a piece of crap).
I also have 2 episodes of Firefly loaded onto it just for my boss to watch whenever I see him again. The episodes are just loaded on there as an external drive since I'm not buying the video iPod. Another reason why I wanted the 60GB of space.

Time to jump on the protostar bashing bandwagon I guess.
You would be the first person I've met in a while who doesn't have at least 1500 songs. I have about 32 gigs of music on my system and my roomates have about 20 each.
You think that takes a long time to download? You must not know how to use the internet. Sure it takes a long time to download all that, but queing it up takes up relatively little. I mean you don't have to sit there and watch every meg download... The internet does work while you're not watching, I promise.
Just because you don't have a wide selection of music, doesn't mean it's weird when other people do.11/16/2005 5:25:24 PM |
