I don't know what happened, but I lost internet. I am using Road Runner through a router. The other three computers on the router still work.
I have already reset the modom and the router.
I have already run spyware and virus scans on the computer and those have come up clean.
When I tell it to "repair connection", I get can not renew IP address. I have it set to find IP address automatically. It comes up 0.0.0.0 and I have tried to manually select an IP address and that does not work either.

Any ideas on what I need to do, or how I can fix this?

if using dhcp does the pc show up in the router's list of active MAC addresses - try manually setting the IP also

I tried manually setting the IP address, and that didn't work.

The rest of what you said, I have no idea what dhcp or router's list of active addresses is. I just have done those things said above on the advice of a friend. I am not all that literate in the way of computers.

does the cable TV work?
I assume you've reset the computers as well as the hardware. Shut down PCs, unplug router, and modem. Plug in router wait a min, then modem wait a min, then power up computer. ensure all the correct lights are are working on the modem and router.

if that doesn't work then try a hard reset of the router (google for linksys hard reset..or whatever brand u have), you will lose all customized settings but it may fix your problem. there's also usually a "reset to factory settings" button in the router config software, but I would trust the actual hard reset a little more.

oh and try to cut the router out of the equation...plug cable line into the modem, and plug your computer directly into the modem...see if that works. its what RR will have you do if you decide to call them .

The cable TV works. I have reset the computer, the router, and the modem.
I have a D-Link router. There are no settings in it. I just pluged it in and went with it.
Plugging in my computer directly to the modem does not change anything. I still get "not able to renew IP address"
I called road runner. They told me to reset the modem. Then they reset the connection from their end. They said that is all they are able to do. Still no change. I am pretty sure there is something wrong with my computer. Any other ideas?

What version of windows? check to see you didn't disable your lan card in my network connections. try opening a command prompt and type in "ping 127.0.0.1" without the quotes and tell us what you see.

^sub or sub box? For what vehicle? What type of sub, what type of box? You paying for materials?

i doubt that even goes through his network card. isn't the loopback completely handled within the OS?

so i take it the other computers on the network work fine?

if the others work, go into the device manager, find your network card, right click, uninstall. reboot, your card will reinstall. if that doesn't work do you mave any more network cards to try?

and make sure you do all troubleshooting connected directly to the modem...once you fix hook back up to the router

I was referring to 2 different solutions and not as in pinging the loopback as to ascertain whether his nic is functional in network devices.

Also try typing in the command prompt "ipconfig /all" and tell us what you see

Couple of things first, test your cable modem by plugging in a computer to it directly see if you get any access. If you get access you eliminate your modem from the equation.

I would go with something on your router being messed up, have you "reset" the router as in pushing the little black button in the back with a paper clip?

I think the problem is that my drivers are messed up. I have a RUNDLL error with a network extension. Does anyone have the drivers for

Intel(R) PRO/100 VM Network Connection

That is my network card, and I can only find "contact the distributor for drivers" online.

This network card is not distributed through Intel. It is added as a computer manufacturer option. They do not have the drivers for this online, and I don't want to "sign up" on the sites where I found it in order to download it.

Ive been putting this off too long now to do a system restore. Also, it may not be just the drivers, but that is where I need to start to try, and go from there.

if it's using an intel chipset then the intel drivers will work - it doesn't matter who the hell distributed it

The intel site says that I have to contact the distributor/manufacturer of my computer to get the drivers.

Anyway, I've had it for tonight. I will try again later.

what kind of computer is it? if homebuilt whos name is on the actual network card or motherboard (open case and chack it out)


first off tho, did you try the right click unistall I recommended above. if not thats where you should start.

I did that, and it did not fix it.

I went and bought a new network card today. Mine was 5 years old, so I figured I might as well. Of course it was defective and the cat-5 cable would not even stay clipped in to the card. Get to try again tomorrow.

We may have issues with the wiring in the apt. My roomates laptop does not work in my room as well.

As of today, the internet died throughout the apt. Now I have to figure out what is going on everywhere.
