1) don't insult me for having an ipod - my brother gave me his old one as a christmas gift
it's an older ipod and it looks like this:
(i know that's a sucky picture)
every so often the wheel won't work (it usually scrolls with a light touch) and i'll have to really push hard on it to get it to scroll, but it always returns to normal in a day or so
now it's been two days and hasn't returned to normal - can i get it fixed, how much will it cost, and is there any way to get it fixed without having to use the apple store
i also don't want to have to buy a new one
thanks! 11/15/2005 3:54:32 PM |

not that your response will help me diagnose your machine in any way, but is it a Touch-Sensitive scroll wheel or on that actually moves? 11/15/2005 4:39:01 PM |

it's the wheel that actually moves (i think only the newer models have the touch sensitive ones)
so to make it work i have to really push hard on it and it only registers on the left side
the top (menu) button is also broken
and in the last 10 minutes, the back button stopped working too 11/15/2005 4:46:44 PM |

I believe that version of the iPod had an issue with the wheel and gunk getting up underneath it. A reason why they went to the touch-sensitive wheel instead.

wow, First Generation. They stopped selling those in July 2002.
I think you're gonna have a tough time getting that thing repaired without taking it to the Apple Store. (And even then it would probably be a bitch.)
It's very possible that there's just dirt beneath the wheel, like ^ posted. Disassembling it yourself is gonna be the cheapest way to go... 11/15/2005 4:58:26 PM |

oh...so bringing it to the barn with all the dust probably wasn't the best idea i guess 11/15/2005 4:59:07 PM |

Yep, that deserves the busted face.
Such a great face, have wished it was on the IM programs many a time.
If it's just dust though, a can of compressed air might do the trick.
