my mom found this on the internet and wanted me to check it out for her. http://oxyfreshww.com/
you add this to the dog's drinking water and it's supposed to eliminate its bad breath. i don't know, i'm really skeptical. the main active ingredient is sodium chlorite (NOT chloride).
have any of you heard of this? or used it before?

Dogs have bad breath because they are need of a good dental hygene regime. Get their teeth cleaned at least once a year (for greyhounds and toy breeds, this might be needed every 6 months or so) and brush their teeth ~3 X a week (or get some CET chews if you're lazy). Some people have had fantastic luck with Greenies.
Tarter accumulation is mostly nasty smelling bacteria just seething on your pet's teeth and gums.
Also, keeping your pet's teeth cleaned keeps them healthier. Keeping all that bacteria out of their systems means a stonger immune system and better vital organ function.
I'd say skip the OxyFresh and put that money towards something that is going to treat the problem, not the symptoms. 11/15/2005 8:45:18 PM |

I have never had a bad breath problem. Give your pet plenty of things to chew on to remove tarter.
Yearly teeth cleanings are NOT recommended as it also removes the enamel. It is much better to try to prolong the health of your pet's teeth with healthy chewing of nylabones, rawhides and dry food then to do yearly cleanings. 11/16/2005 9:12:15 AM |

that's what my vet told me to use for my cats' gingivitis. Can't say if its doing much good.
On second thought, I just went and smelled her breath, and I think it actually does smell better than I remember...
Also, it's only sold at vets, I think.

I use it. It neutralizes the bacteria in their mouth and help with tooth decay. In addition to brushing, its great.

What vet told you that?? It doesn't kil ltheir enamel any more than ours! And no vet I've ever been too recommends rawhides, those things are bad news. They're all made in other countries that don't have chemicals laws about use, and they are very dangerous for getting lodged in throats.11/16/2005 3:03:08 PM |

you can brush your pets teeth ( they have toothbrushes or this mitt things)
i just give all of mine a greenie or similar dental chew a few times a week and i've never had a problem.
(i assume) it depends on what kind of food your pet is on. moist food probably isn't as good as dry. quality also weighs in some.
not all rawhides are dangerous. there are ones that are recommended by vets and aid in dental care 11/16/2005 4:24:53 PM |

1. It does break down the enamel, for both humans and dogs. However we add floride to our toothpaste to help. Also have you even SEEN a dental? I have worked as a vet tech. Ask a vet. 2. you can get rawhides made in the US, you just have to read the packaging. If you also read the rest of my post I also mentioned nylabones. When you give a dog a rawhide you should always watch the dog and when the piece is small enough that it can be put in the mouth you should take it away. Rawhides as well as other shreddable material should not be put in kennels or given when the animal is not going to be watched. However I did not include that earlier because that wasn't the point of the comment.11/16/2005 7:05:45 PM |

To cure our Boxers ^ bad breath we just placed a Listerine Strip in her mouth...
Bad crunchy kitty cookie breath, or horsey pepples breath ... ALL GONE!
It's cheap, easy, and safe.
I've never heard of OxyFresh, but if it works, give me a holler!
