usually when you start IE the cursor is already focused on the window, right

well now when i start IE and try to type in google, i have to actually click the window before i can type. the cursor shows up in the box like its already focused

but if i just start typing without paying attention, the text is nowhere to be found

yeah but it doesn't mean you have a trojan. might be adware, windows just being gay, or lasers from outer space. run AVG, symatec, or whatever in safe mode. also run spybot search and destroy and lavasoft's adaware. if none of them pick anything up, and you're not noticing anything weird in your process list, your system isn't flakey, and your performance isn't taking a hit... then you're probably fine.
