As long as he can have everything graded in time to submit the grades, I don't know of any stipulations that you must know all of your other grades before you take the final.

i believe its the case that you can do almost anything during deadweek, as long as you assigned it in advance... you just can't do any pop papers, projects, or tests (although quizes are fine i think) during the week. even when professors do a pop test, quiz, paper, or project (all of which ive experienced in deadweek) unless someone complains to the higher ups and risks putting themselves in the bad graces of the professor, then nothing will be done. very few professors seem to take the dead week rule seriously, and the ones who do follow it seem to do it more by chance. some professors have even admitted to not being aware of the rule. my advice is suck it up, sometimes an unfair option is still the best available.

^That's my same understanding...they can tell you during a 6 PM class next Tuesday night about a new project due before finals and they still aren't technically breaking the dead week rule.

In my experience, most profs don't want any more to worry about than grading finals and stuff already assigned. I've never had anyone spring anything new on me during dead week.

is this an intro or some other general philosophy class, or is this jessephs ancient phi class?

If its jessephs class he has pretty good and extensive notes online about aristotle, I'd suggest using them and commentary in the text rather than a translation of the original. Because a few thousand year old ideas that were translated from greek into arabic then into latin then into other languages aren't really getting you closer to the original meaning unless you already have a strong understanding of aristotle. Summaries and commentary would serve just as well and be easier to understand. If its a more generic phi class then I don't know the quality of the profs notes, so I'd suggest just hunting for commentary in your texts for the class, and get it done well before deadweek.
