The halfshaft went in in 20 minutes.

Tranny oil in in 3 minutes (courtesy of air gun poked into hole I punched in the side of the jug).

Old antifreeze out with nary a drop spilled.

First thermostat housing bolt out...no issues.

Second one wrings off. Dammit. Who the hell thought of using M6-1.0 bolts on a T-stat housing?

Well, time to clear everything out of the way so I can get the drill to it. This is on a Honda engine, so you know everything is gonna be fun to get to.

Dizzy out. Hoses out. Starter out (YES, so I can get to this bolt).

Wiring harness out....no...wait a minute...O2 sensor lead won't come loose

*TUG* GODDAMMIT...the wire pulled out of the connector. Well, at least it's undone now. Shit.

Punch the bolt. Get the drill, and all I have is some cheap-ass bits. You all know what happens next. I'm 3/4 through AND THE GODDAMN BIT SHATTERS.

Looks like I'm done for tonight. Amazing how the easiest of shit turns into a great big clusterfuck.

I should have waited to go get a cobalt bit, but NOOOO. I had to try to git 'er done tonight.

Yeah. I am crashing out and fucking with this shit in the am. I hope a cobalt bit will cut through that hss bit piece stuck in the hole. I can't get it out.

I've done that successfully before. Can't remember if it was a titanium bit or a cobalt, but it didn't slow down for the HSS remnance.

is there in fact an easier engine to work on than a small or big block chevy? i've never wrung a bolt off in the motor.

You haven't worked on enough of them yet. You'll find the impossible bolt.

SBC's are indeed just about the easiest engine to work on, especially the TBI ones with serpentine belt arrangement.

I used to install a lot of crate engines...back in '97, I was trying like hell to get a job in and out the door. A hint for all of you would-be SBC installers: if you're using stock cast iron manifolds and you're going back with the original ones, get you a manifold spreader and use NEW bolts.

You guessed it. At 1:00 in the morning, I'm bolting up manifolds on this engine, and one of the outside bolts is going in tight. SNAP! Brittle from years of heat soak and carbon embedding from exhaust, and tension on the outer ear of the manifold. I was in the shop until 3:30 in the morning getting that bitch out. Hard as a brickbat.

yeah, replacing the struts in my new car at 1am while it's snowing and the outer cv joint has just a little too much play in it.

bastard pops out and i'm out a car until i can get it towed to the dealer who was nice enough to replace them for free. worked on it till 5am with no luck.

damn parts.

Unfortunately, I've worked on plenty, my friend. Mostly 22RE's, but the 22R is obviously simpler b/c it's carb'd instead of EFI.

---if you don't know how to do something without breaking something else, maybe you should watch someone that knows what they're doing a few more times before a self attempt, or attempt it with supervision of someone that knows something. I doubt it was a joke, if it was for him then great, but its something that commonly seems to happen among the garage fucks. Sure, shit breaks from time to time, but every time you change a thermostat, you shouldn't have to put in a new waterpump too...shit like that is just ignorance.

hahah what you might not realize Dan (spydyrwyr) is that i actually drive a 22r daily. i Need to come hang out with you durham folks sometime soon as i've owned it since january and not steve, matt, or lee has seen it yet.

no matter what you say, still not even close to the ease of any vortec or earlier chebby, although definitely easier than any other rice burners out there.

I think when i get some money i might sink to solid axling Puta (the wondertruck) to keep the legend alive, but so far i haven't managed to get it stuck and want the extra milage, and bed convenience of being able to toss an axle over the bedside without lifting.

can't even get a good go cart for $100, and i got a whole truck

I wasn't trying to start a debate here guys, I was just throwing in my two cents. I understand what you're saying about a SBC being easiest to work on. I'll agree with that, simply based on the fact that I have no experience with 'em. Not to mention I was just trying to bust James' balls. What I meant by "unfortunately" is that I don't want to be working on my yota engine or anyone else's b/c that means something's wrong, I wasn't trying to make an argument about it, but I can see how that could have been misconstrued as "no you're wrong, i'm right," but i didn't mean it like that at all.

James, I can't believe you got that yota for $100! great find!!! We're going to URE Dec. 3-4, you should bring that beast! But please tell me you did something w/ that paint/wheels!?!

hahah I know, i'm just saying don't get me wrong cause i enjoy my 22 r and its 30 mpg maintainence free goodness. i'd def be down for at least day tripping to uwharrie, its been way too long since i've been, and yes this beast will do wolves den at the very least.

For two wheel drive its been doing its fair share of crawling over rocks and railroad trestles etc on flyfishing trips, fireroads are just no longer challenging enough for this offroad beast

And I agree James, the paint definately gives it character! That's the first stock 2wd yota 2nd gen pickup i've ever seen like it!!

Friend of mine lent me his set of Snap-On EZ outs and lefty cobalt bits. This is a nice set. Might have to get one of my own. I have another friend who is a Snap-On dealer.

there is a bit extractor thing you can get with two fingers that go down in the flute you can back it out with, works decent on taps too, as long as they aren't incredibly tiny bolts, so i doubt it would help with your 6mm ones

As many times as I've had this happen in the past, I should own a set. I finally learned to go slow, lube, and don't put all my weight behind the drill a couple of years ago.

I don't know what got into me this go-'round. Of course, I also drill a pilot and then do about three or four steps. This was even smaller than the 6mm.

I'm embarrased to even say they were in my toolbox.

Hell, cheap ass was not replacing the damn thermostat when the engine was out 38k miles ago. I didn't replace the water pump either, and I had to do that about 5 months ago.
