why, in a world becoming increasingly globalized and interconnected through technology, trade, and culture, it is in the US's best interest to pull themselves out of the UN? is this a new isolationist age, or do some people seriously think that world policy should be decided in the best interest of the US? it cant be b/c the UN is going to inact some kind of tyranny on the US. if they did, we, you know, just have to vote it down.

I expect maybe 5% serious answers, 85% BS, and 10% bashing of me for being some kind of "euro-trash, french fag" (you know who you are )

Governments naturally coalesce one level beneath the most expansive government possible. So on that end the UN is a waste of time, money and diplomatic energy.

But since they're essentially our bitch anyway, I'd disagree with pulling out.

my concern is over the food programs. i dont think oxfam can handle it all on their own.

id be for disbanding it and going back to the old system of alliances (develop your own with whoever you want) if its impossible to come to consensus as a global group (and it almost is). thing is, wed be forced into some important alliances we'd otherwise not want, unless we're total hypocrites (China? hello?).

the us pulling out and giving the rest of them the finger seems very irresponsible to me, just a sign of more of this "New American Century" idiocy.

Only the fringe extreme seriously believe in pulling out of the United Nations. There is no reason for us to withdrawal from the organization, especially since they have no force of law to impose any type of regulation upon us that we do not agree with. If tiny, puny countries like North Korea, Israel, and Iran can get away with stupid stuff, who says we can't?

That being said, it's better to appear as if we're supporting the greater international community and being a good player and at the same time, giving puny countries the opportunity to feel respected and heard instead of cutting them all off and letting them go nuts instead.

in the end, i hope that this iraq shit blows over in a few years, and we go back to the relationship we had in the 90s...

^but then you have the people who are still mad at france and still mad about iraq and are using the UN's handling of events like last years tsunami to further their cause. id like to hope that their the looney bin and not the norm.

personally, im just concerned with us keeping up the effort in africa w/ them, and eventually going back to peacekeeping missions w/ them, although i hope we learned from Rwanda how NOT to do that.

When people say "pull out of the UN" I think they simply mean that we should cut off funding. We do pay more than our fair share (well, more than anyone else).

We should keep our security council seat and veto all new spending bills (they believe).

I personally don't care whether the UN exists or not. So, by inertia, keep it around, pay the bill. However, any future increases in the UN Bill should be considered a separate appropriation and voted on its merits.
