Quote : | "'Trophy' video exposes private security contractors shooting up Iraqi drivers
London Telegraph Sean Rayment November 27 2005
A "trophy" video appearing to show security guards in Baghdad randomly shooting Iraqi civilians has sparked two investigations after it was posted on the internet, the Sunday Telegraph can reveal.
The video has sparked concern that private security companies, which are not subject to any form of regulation either in Britain or in Iraq, could be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent Iraqis.
The video, which first appeared on a website that has been linked unofficially to Aegis Defence Services, contained four separate clips, in which security guards open fire with automatic rifles at civilian cars. All of the shooting incidents apparently took place on "route Irish", a road that links the airport to Baghdad.
The road has acquired the dubious distinction of being the most dangerous in the world because of the number of suicide attacks and ambushes carried out by insurgents against coalition troops. In one four-month period earlier this year it was the scene of 150 attacks.
In one of the videoed attacks, a Mercedes is fired on at a distance of several hundred yards before it crashes in to a civilian taxi. In the last clip, a white civilian car is raked with machine gun fire as it approaches an unidentified security company vehicle. Bullets can be seen hitting the vehicle before it comes to a slow stop." |

Couple this with the "shoot 'em all and let God sort 'em out" mentality, and all the rape and torture of Iraqis at Abu Ghraib (and all the other prisons). Also, as news reports have shown, many U.S. troops blare satanic "death metal" music while in Iraq, and have "666" and skulls painted on their tanks and vehicles.

I know. I have sinned. Kill me now.
Well, I did provide the video itself. Notice the emphasis in the title. 11/28/2005 12:30:36 PM |

I saw this video a few days ago and it is pretty disturbing if they were indeed shooting randomly. It should be noted that many of these vehicle appeared to be closing on the convoy fairly rapidly which *may* explain the reason for shooting. Im not really sure where saliburyboy's reference to American Soldiers applies since the people in question are not officially soldiers and likely not american (Aegis Defence is a brit co.). 11/28/2005 2:48:40 PM |

Who hired the private security contractors? 11/28/2005 2:53:32 PM |
SkiSalomon All American 4264 Posts user info edit post |
Depends on who they are protecting. The answer is not necessarily the one that you are getting at (DOD). They could be hired by any number of federal agencies from the various countries involved in the war and reconstruction. They could also be hired to provide protection to the non-governmental and private organizations in country doing development work.
Aegis has had issues in the past in Iraq. If I recall correctly, a year or so ago they took a hit for hiring people without really checking references. they apparently had hired some guys that had fabricated extensive military careers. When they do check, they are generally regarded to have more relaxed hiring standards than some of the other security firms. 11/28/2005 3:04:02 PM |

Perhaps they were following and ambushing a known terrorist leader?
It seems like a good way to do it-- you radio in where the guy's going and what he's driving, another guy gets in his way, and sprays the guy from the back window.
I mean, I'm fairly certain that what we're seeing here is wrong, but I doubt it's "trophy hunting." 11/28/2005 3:10:56 PM |

As far as I know, Aegis is not in the business of hunting terrorists. They are minimally armed and their purpose is to be able to get out of a kill zone while keeping their client safe.
However, I would hope that there is more to what we are seeing. 11/28/2005 3:42:38 PM |

I'm not trying to defend them. In fact it'd surprise me if what we're seeing isn't wrong.
I'm just saying... this "trophy hunting" crap is silly. 11/28/2005 4:01:00 PM |

Yeah, I doubt that there was any 'trophy hunting' going on since most PSD convoys have cameras mounted in their vehicles to document any incidents. However, it is pretty much a free for all among contractors so a few bad apples could have a field day doing bad things as we appear to be seeing here. While there are supposed to be restrictions on engagement and weapons, a few of the PSDs that Ive known that were in Iraq said that whatever they could get their hands on was fair game. 11/28/2005 4:06:25 PM |

We didn't see a single person in the video. It could have been Michael Jackson for all we know.
Secondly, no one appeared to die in the video.
Thirdly, why did they dub in Elvis? It was clearly added after the video was cut and editted.
Finally, the gun sounds too much like an AK, contractors would be carrying MP5s or M16s.
Only an idiot would buy this video at face value. Good going salisburybot. 11/28/2005 7:31:02 PM |

^ you are correct that we do not see anyone in this video but it was allegedly taken from an Aegis convoy and the voice on the radio in the background is scottish or similar. therefore it is reasonable to assume that americans werent involved.
-yes, the elvis was dubbed over after the fact.
- you are incorrectly assuming that contractors carry m16s and mp5s. Sure, they generally prefer these weapons but they are not always available. You can very frequently encounter instances where contractors are carrying AK variants, particularly in the early days following the fall of saddam when m4s were scarce. 11/29/2005 2:04:47 AM |
