OXFORD, Miss. — Mississippi fired offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone on Monday after the Rebels finished coach Ed Orgeron's first season with one of the nation's worst offenses.
Ole Miss ranked 111th in Division I-A with 281.7 total yards per game, averaged an SEC-worst 13.5 points and 73 yards rushing, and ran for a combined 48 yards in ending a 3-8 season with consecutive losses to Arkansas, LSU and Mississippi State.
"I think that, when it all boiled down, production of the offense was a major factor," athletic director Pete Boone said.
Speculation that Mazzone's job could be in jeopardy had been going around for much of the past week, though Orgeron said he decided to fire him Monday.
"I want to go out and find the best coach available that believes he can win at Ole Miss, like I do," Orgeron said. "I want that coach with me, and I want him to be able to work very close to me and our staff and be a leader on our offense."
Mazzone, who also coached the Rebels' quarterbacks, could not be reached for comment.
"I'm going outside to find a coordinator," Orgeron said. "I really want to take my time, research and get the best guy in here that fits with Ole Miss."
Orgeron, who came to Ole Miss last December after helping Southern California to two national championships, hired Mazzone from North Carolina State to orchestrate an offensive scheme similar to the one run by the Trojans.
But the Ole Miss offense failed to show much progress and couldn't settle on a quarterback, and its rushing game was virtually non-existent after freshman Mico McSwain injured his right ankle early in the Arkansas game.
The Rebels rushed for 10, 7 and 31 yards in their final three games.
Mazzone previously was the Rebels' offensive coordinator under Tommy Tuberville from 1995-98.
Mazzone was fired after the first year of a three-year contract which Boone said paid him about $230,000 annually." |

heh, more like the other way around. Rivers made him look good. I remember when Mazzone came in to replace Galbraith during Rivers' senior year, Amato had indicated that Mazzone would have to use the offense that Rivers was used to (basically the one that Chow had taught Philip). Then, of course, once Mazzone used his own bubble screen offense, it was clear that this guy knew about as much about running an offense as our former volleyball coach. 11/29/2005 9:28:35 AM |

I don't get why he was fired. It sounds like Mazzone's system was already implemented perfectly. It took a couple years to get the Mazzone offense fully in place at NCSU.11/29/2005 9:30:04 AM |
