Man, I am meticulous. Or at least try to be!

No, basically this one is a process of elimination. I couldn't find a leak the other night, even after bringing the car up to temp and eyeballing everything closely. Bad thing is, when the car's hot, if the leak is small, it flashes to steam almost immediately, and I figured it might be leaking, but couldn't tell. No tank cracks...and I don't have a pressure tester. Not yet, anyway.

First thing for me to do...replace the t-stat to make sure it's not intermittently sticking and boiling the system over. Car is a '93 Camry...and the t-stat was the original.

This car is a New Hampshire car, and surface corrosion is apparent in several places. You should see the radiator! The fins between the flues have corroded away at the bottom! So it's VERY likely she has a pinhole leak.

This car may be a prime candidate for Bar's Leaks until the radiator gets replaced. I know it isn't a big leak. And I can NOT find any evidence of the water pump leaking.

Brian...I didn't even loosen a hose clamp! They're pinch clamps, anyway...

I thought I heard somewhere that you can use a black light to look for coolant leaks

Not suprising. I happen to have a small one around here.

Antifreeze does look like it would fluoresce very nicely under black light.

Yep. I had some...there are several types you can get. One that's soluble in oil (for engine/tranny), one that's soluble in PAG or ester oil (for AC), and I suppose there's one for cooling systems, though I've never bought it.

Judging from the color properties of antifreeze, you'd think it would naturally fluoresce pretty well.

How is the person determining they have a leak? Watching the overflow tank is not a very good way about it.

Actually, for 13 New Hampsha winters, this car has come out suprisingly well. The radiator is the only really bad sign of corrosion I have seen. The rest is mostly cosmetic.

Doncha love chalky oxidized aluminum?

Nope. Seriously, Ben, you oughta see the radiator. It's amazing it hasn't just let go altogether.

oh, i got the impression you couldnt find the leak, so i was thinking about the places that leak and are hard to see. If its antifreeze, it shouldnt be hot enough to just vaporize.

Pinhole leaks often do not stay wet when at operating temp (yes, the antifreeze will evaporate and dry), and therefore they can be hard to find if they are in a tight place. I got intermittent wisps of steam from around the corroded areas of the radiator. Just slightly.

update: the piece of shit finally let go on me today...despite feeding the coolant-guzzling radiator all the stuff it wants, it overheated on the highway today and is now STUCK at an office complex off Ten Ten Road

leaking like crazy (i think the hole got bigger) and as i pulled off the exit it made a painful grinding noise...filled it with more coolant and water, but two minutes back on the road the gauge was going up again so now it's stuck

anyone want some parts??

guess you should have had a new radiator installed when the old one was identified as rotten.

Yep, should have said "get a new radiator" pronto...

Thing is, there really wasn't an easily identified leak when I looked at it. Just the fins eaten away. Flues looked okay. Guess I should have brought a stronger light!

thinking $1,000-1,500 for a busted 92-96 camry is about twice what its worth, esp one from up north. youre better off fixing it and then selling it for $2500

I second that...Teggy's getting a lil long in the tooth, and I need something a bit cleaner and newer fer goin' to work and courtin' and whatnot...

And it's nothing for me to drop an engine in that car if it needs as much. Hell, I may be interested!
