ive been searching about engine oil today and i cant believe the variety of answers i've found. everything from 0w40 to 20w50 synth to some who swear the e36 motors were designed for dino only. what in the world? What do you guys think?

as far as synthetic goes, if you have older seals, i'd stay with dino as there have been quite a few cases of leaking attributed to the combination of old seals and syn. oil. i had a e46 and used mobil 1 synthetic with no issue.

as far as the weight, i would think your climate should determine what oil to use. cold - 10w-40. warm - 20w-50.

I run 0w-40 in my E46 but only because I couldn't get 5w-40. Hope that might help.

^amsoil euro is 5w40. theres a guy up in north raleigh who sells it for the price of M1.

you can get mobil1 5w40.. and castrol syntec makes one too.. voll sythese.. pentosin... all available locally.

just a thought as far as those of you who want to run synthetic in an older car....

I run full synthetic in everything, and had the bright idea that my 180k mile Yota pickup would like it just as much despite already being leaky. After realizing the truth behind this genious plan was a large puddle in the driveway,

I used LUCAS and have been running that with mobil 1 for 12k miles with no leaks whatsoever and no gaskets changed.

well mine is running M1 15w50 and doesnt leak anything and the PO said it doesnt burn any in 5k miles. so that makes me think maybe i should try something a little lighter.. but from what i gather this is a pretty common oil in these mofos.. but every cold start in the morning i get nervous...I FEEL MY ENGINE WEARING AWAAAAYYYYY

i forget where i was reading it, maybe this months hot rod, but something claimed that the seal thing is only from old synthetics, that new ones have additives to not cause leaks. obviously from james' post this aint the case.

i don't understand you people, why the fuck would you think the wolf web is a good place to ask what kind of oil to put in your car. you have a popular performance sedan/coupe. there are several forums you could go to where people who actually own the damn things could share their experience. but wait, maybe you should check with optmusprimer first.
