So I'm about to try to fix my gfs internet, but I figured I would save time by posting this to see if anyone who's really smart can help me.

Like the title says, she's having trouble authenticating to anything secure: email, tracs, online banking etc... When she tries to go to a site requiring a secure login it just takes her to an error page. Fortunately tdub login isn't secure

any ideas about what to do? I'm thinking of just downloading a different browser, she's using ie, but I don't think she'd be thrilled with that solution. I'm sure I just have to reset some setting somewhere, but idk

yea, that's kinda what i figured would be easiest, thanks for the link

so i'm having trouble connecting, i tried going under options>connection settings

then changing direct connect to auto detect proxy settings. This still didn't work. Do i need to enter in a configuration or url associated with the wireless router?

make sure your IE is configured to even allow secured content. There are so many settings that seeming conflict and overlap each other in IE that it might be more complicated than this. Actually in all likelyhood..

In IE go to Tools> Internet options> Advanced> scroll down to security options and make sure that "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication" has a check mark beside it

Also make sure her Windows Time is accurate/synchronized

after that im out of ideas past the posibility that:
if the secure data is encrypted,
if cmos clock accuracy is vital to file encryption as it is with some compression tools,
and if your gf has a computer with an older motherboard/inaccurate onboard clock

nah, it's pretty fing new, but what about that mozilla shit, for wireless do i have to enter a configuration key for the proxies, can't get it to connect, i'll try that ie shit when i go back to her house i guess

did you try synchronizing her clock at time.windows.com? i know i have had issues with it before on account of my clock being homosexual

^^ you're not going to get anywhere by bashing Tech Talk because we wont help

and by anything "secure" do you mean any https:// websites? What sort of error page is displayed, its it a 4xx error, like 404 Not Found? Or is it some other sort of error?

I would recommend installing *ALL* Windows Updates on her comptuer, including the "root certificates" update which will update the Microsoft trusted root certificate provider certificates, which in turn make any other digital signatures valid

Lastly, this problem seems more of an issue with some crazy spyware/adware/virus type thing. Run the usual AdAware, and whatever other spyware programs are applicable.

If the problem doesnt exist if you use Firefox on the computer, then its definately some crazy shit she's got installed with IE, and thats her own fault.

You talk about proxy settings, do you know what a proxy is? Why would she be using a proxy? If she has RoadRunner or some similar internet access, she'll need no proxy at all, disable the proxy settings unless you know for sure that she is behind a proxy. I am behind a proxy, but only because I'm at work behing our corporate proxy/firewall/satan

In short:
- try firefox for comparison to IE
- run adaware software
- windows updates

The honest answer (for me at least) is I don't know. Update/clean up her computer, post some additional information, then we'll give feedback if we know anything.

Try and see if putty will work.

uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" under internet options/advanced
That is probably what it is. Clearing out her cache of bad cookies/corrupt scripts is probably a good idea too.
