I know that there has been a controversy about whether we actually landed on the moon on our first US trip. Holla 12/4/2005 7:35:43 PM |

^^^^ The astronauts put the flag there. They fiddled with it. There is no air --> no drag to slow it down. 12/4/2005 9:08:17 PM |

Yes, I was there. Freighthopped a ride trying to run away from home as a kid. Gave 'sleeping with the moon for cover' a whole new meaning.

Hundreds of thousands of American workmen were involved in the moon race. They must all be lying.
Watch these hundreds of hours of mundane, boring videos, and all your doubts will be put to rest: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/alsj/frame.html
My personal favorite is the golf shot: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a14/a14v.1350811.ram

Oh, you're asking about the prior missions.
Apollo 8 didn't have a Lunar Module. Apollo 9 tested the LM in Earth orbit along with a spacewalk.
Apollo 10 almost did land, but consider this quote from one of the pilots:
Quote : | "Two hours later, at the end of another lunar orbit, Stafford and Cernan were ready to rehearse the ascent and rendezvous. Once again passing low over the southwestern corner of the Sea of Tranquillity, they jettisoned the Descent Stage and fired the Ascent Engine for about 15 seconds and, soon thereafter, made a perfect rendezvous with Young. Almost everything had gone perfectly. There had been one anxious moment when, at the moment of staging, the Ascent Stage began to spin and pitch. As it turned out, a control switch for the small steering rockets had been improperly set and it took Stafford eight long seconds to regain control of the spacecraft and then fire the Ascent Engine.
"I saw the lunar horizon go by about seven or eight times in ten seconds," Cernan says. "That's a hair-raising experience. That's when I said 'Son-of-a-bitch, what the hell happened?' " |
So I really doubt they had their shit together enough to make a landing at that point. Besides, why wouldn't NASA announce it?12/5/2005 7:08:02 AM |

i think we landed on the moon, but I can TOTALLY understand why someone would say we didn't.
reasons to believe we did land on the moon:
- we have samples from the landing - we put reflective mirrors to use lasers to detect the exact distance to it - you can see the landing sites with a powerful telescope 12/5/2005 9:36:31 AM |

If we have made it to the moon before, I'm just wondering why it's going to take NASA 15 years to get us back there now. Shouldn't our technology be so much better that we could do it in 5-10 years? Also, why haven't we been in 30 years? Did we learn everything we needed to learn in just 2-3 visits? 12/5/2005 1:30:01 PM |

I think we landed on the moon.
At the same time if some time down the road, the government came out and said "hey, we didn't", I'm not sure I'd be overly surprised.
Not sure I'd really care much either. 12/5/2005 1:58:22 PM |
