how do i specify multiple outgoing servers for my multiple email accounts? i realize that it tells you that you only need one outgoing server (even if you have multiple accounts), but do i really want me ncsu mail going through the gmail server? or vice versa? i have something like six email accounts set up in tbird, and i don't want them using the same outgoing server

ideas? links? am i just stupid? commence!

You can't even use the NCSU mail server unless you're on their network.

The reason you only need one server is that because many of the servers only take mail sent from within their domain.

You should be able to configure multiple servers though in case you are in different locations when you send mail.

you do not need an outgoing server unless you are transfering mail to accounts internal to that network.


If you only ever send mail to account accessable via the internet, then set the client to send directly to the internet. This is the proper way to send mail.

i didn't know there was a proper way to send email...i set it to the gmail server, and it works fine (i figured their server's more reliable than either ncsu or my own personal webserver, so...)

you dont need any outbound server at all.

In fact, Gmail should block all email sent by you using an address thats not from whatever@gmail.com.

It is proper to send mail out to the internet directly rather than through a 3rd party when you dont need that 3rd party.

Sending directly to the internet is also more reliable then depending on a 3rd party relay. In this case the only server that needs to be up is the receiving server.

first - i appreciate the education, i do

second - the gmail outbound server doesn't have any problem because it's secured and in order to use it you have to put in your email address and password again...since i saved them, it just does it automatically and i guess, as far as gmail is concerned, i AM sending it from a gmail account...the "from" field in the emails all say the correct address, so i'm not going to worry about that too much

third - it complains when i don't fill in outgoing server info...so what way do i have around that (other than using the gmail server)?
