I read that a pump inlet flush is much better than a cooler line flush

http://www.gadgetonline.com/TransFlush.htm

can anyone confirm this, and does anyone know the best place to get a flush? Every place I've called so far (dealerships) has the cooler line machines.

nothing wrong with cooler line machines, i have used them many times, and you can go from shit black to clean fluid. most places still drop the pan and change the filter afterwards too, at least thats what we always did.

better than jiffy lube i guess, but yeah $120 is a good price to have a shop do it, if it includes a filter change

like i said, not a bad deal if that includes a filter, everywhere will fuck you, i do my own for about $30 worth of fluid and a $17 filter, but then i have to dump the machine, fill it with fresh fluid, and spend the time to do it,

wait, thats what people pay mechanics for

^^That's because it's only a flush, not a flush and filter change.

Hell, I do the cooler line thing...fuck the whole flush thing with the flush machine.

you mean you hook up a mcahine to it, or just drain it that way turning the engine on while its disconnected?

A source of confusion is the different types of flush machines. Some clean your system with solvents before putting fluid in (which sounds scary). Some simply pump new fluid into your system while purging most of the old fluid out. But they're all called flush machines.

No machine. But you've got to be careful, because some of these trannies pump that fluid out IN A HURRY! Best to have two people. One to man the ignition switch, and the other to watch the fluid. Better yet, do it in spurts.

Is a transmission flush a good idea on a manual transmission or would a simple replacement of the gear oil with some penzoil synchromesh be about the same?

For a manual all you need to do is drain and replace.

yeah it's nice that a manual doesn't need a really expensive flush like an auto

I have NFC what a pump inlet flush is.

heres the deal, taken from several years of both good and bad automatic transmission experiences"

theres no reason to add any solvents or other snake oil into your transmission when flushing it. if clean ATF isnt enough to clean out your transmission, then you dont need a flush, you need a rebuild.

i have experience with 2 flush machines at two different shops, operation of both were the same. disconnect ONE transmission cooler line at the radiator (either one works), connect the machine up (its filled with fresh fluid first) and turn it on- the pressure of the incoming fluid being pumped from the transmission (while its getting collected in the machine) is applied to the machines resevior of clean fluid and thats it. in with the new, out with the old. where as most vehicles on the road might have a average ATF capacity of 13 quarts, the machine typically runs 18 quarts or so. its kinda like dialysis or a blood transfusion for your transmission.

we also know that the filter should be changed as well, but here is where i can never make up my mind- change it first then flush it OR flush it and then change the filter?? i suppose doing the filter change before AND after would be ideal, but thats more $ and I honestly dont believe at this point that its worth it. honestly the best thing to do for the average joe is have the drain/refill service done every 2 years or 20k. if your transmission has a OEM drain plug you can probably get away with out dropping the pan and replacing the filter and just the drain/refill for about 4yrs/40k. but always monitor the fluid, learn what it should look like new and keep up with its current condition. if you do a lot of hard driving or hauling/towing DUH youll need to service that shit more often.

if all else fails and you have more questions, find a rebutable independantly owned transmission shop and go talk to the guys there, noone knows more about these things that smell like ATF 24/7. i have found transmission guys to be pretty cool in the past, then again im not exactly a snot nosed EDA (educated dumb ass) coming up and asking them umteen stupid questions while theyre trying to get some work done, so keep that in mind.

^hahahaha...best advice yet in this here thread.

The only flush machine I have used actually had a pump to feed the new fluid in, and you could adjust flow rate. But you have to keep your eye on the dipstick...

i think i want to try the 5 gallon bucket flush on my bonneville during its upcoming big service, but im not sure that i will, i read (i think in motor service) that these late GM transmissions flow roughly a gallon a minute through the the cooler.

lol

i didnt mean i was going to run 5 gallons through it, but that my flush equipment would consist of a 5 gallon bucket catching the old fluid
