is it just me... or does this game seem a lot more difficult than the original snes version?
i'm on mt. ordeals and can't defeat "dark" cecil... and i'm doing about 700-900 worth of damage before he eventually kills me... any ideas? 12/14/2005 11:01:49 PM |

they often ramp up difficulty on ported games just to add some flare or fix a previous problem. i know lunar 2 was supposedly harder when made for playstation and ninja gaiden black was supposedly tweaked. 12/14/2005 11:18:39 PM |

In the case of Final Fantasy IV, they actually made the original EASIER for America. You'll notice that a lot of the characters have new abilities that weren't in Final Fantasy II. For some reason, Square (possibly at the request/demand of Nintendo) removed those abilities. So far I've had no problems taking down any bosses. 12/14/2005 11:21:55 PM |

In the original you just block & heal, do the same here.

It should hit the DS instead. I'd prefer the option to hear the original music to this "enhanced" stuff. I'm nerdy enough to notice the difference. Plus the touch screen would be great for RPGs. 12/15/2005 12:46:34 AM |

I loved Final Fantasy I & II Dawn of Souls for the GBA. I'll be looking forward to III for the DS also. Anyone know when it expected to release? Also, I'm glad they are making it harder. Too many games these days are too easy, and by too easy I mean it takes like a week to finish it. Back in the day it would literally take me months to finish a game. I know that is mostly because they didn't use save games and all, but at least the Final Fantasy games still take a hell of a long time to finish. 12/15/2005 7:40:31 AM |

^^ what did they do to the music? Is it the same music just orchestrated or someting, or is it completely different music? The music from this game was way awesome, that would suck if the actual music is different. 12/15/2005 3:07:10 PM |
ShinAntonio Zinc Saucier 18947 Posts user info edit post |
The music is essentially the same in that none of the notes have been changed and every track has the same tempo, but the instruments sound different. I'm not musically inclined so it's hard to describe. It doesn't ruin the experience. In fact, certain tracks sound slightly better. However, certain key notes don't stand out like the used to. The most glaring example is the climax of Cecil/The Red Wings' theme.
The sound is different too. The sound for casting black magic spells isn't nearly as good as it used to be. For the most part these are complaints that only the hardcore fans would find though and it doesn't ruin the fun or nostalgia. 12/15/2005 3:39:55 PM |

I'll probably be alright with it since I can get the nostaligia straight from the emulator. 12/15/2005 4:46:50 PM |

I played and beat FF1 on a rom. I'm planning on getting Dawn of Souls soon and replaying it there.
Anyways, like you said, the music is the same. The difference is just that they used better samples. It was good music to start out with, but the hardware was poor. In that case, I'd say the NES sounds are pretty hard on the ears, possibly worse on an emulator that I used.
Don't forget the graphics too. A lot of reviews overlook this, but most FF ports have revamped graphics.12/15/2005 11:05:59 PM |

Well, the differences between the SNES and the GBA are slim to nil, aside from the fact that the GBA has some added 3d shit and only draws to about 1/3 of the area (I think).
But yeah, I got this the other day and I've played the hell out of it. I hadn't even played it on emulator in six or seven years, and I'm really enjoying it. I just turned Cecil into an albino. 12/18/2005 12:15:14 PM |

I'm wondering how much this game differs from the PSone port of FF4 that was released in FF Chronicles, which came with Chrono Trigger as well. From what I've read, FF4 advance has all the aspects that were in the original FF4 in Japan, but if I remember correctly, the ported PS version was also the original Japanese version with all the added abilities and translation changes.
The reason for the release of FF2/FF4 in the US being dumbed down was that the game was thought to be too hard for most gamers. The game ended up being dumbed down and a few changes were made in the translation as well. For instance, some characters lacked their specials like Cecil's Dark Wave attack and a translation change was Rosa's Holy spell, which was changed to White in the US release. An FF4: Easytype version was released in Japan after the US release due to the dificulty of the game.
But as I said, the GBA and PS1 versions should be pretty much identical since they both contain the spell Holy and all the characters have their special abilities, like Cecil's Dark Wave. 12/20/2005 9:58:54 AM |

Music sounded kind of tinny in some parts.
The port is horrible compared to the SNES. Controller is sluggish and the game chokes during battle if there are more than 6 sprites on the screen. I've played it on a GBA and on the GameCube adapter and it's the same as the FFVI PlayStation problem. But it's not so bad I didn't play through it three times now.
They removed the item duplication trick. As with most FF updates, they added specific items to heal negative status effects instead of the catch-all "Remedy."
I don't think the game was harder, but at some points I had to intentionally level up for 20 minutes-- specifically before Mt. Hobs. The easiest place in the game to do it is in the summoned monster cage; get in a fight with a summoner who summons the arachne monster and repeatedly kill the spider with blizzara, ice weapons, and thrown weapons. If you wait for Rydia to run out of MP you usually end up racking 75k experience.
I haven't checked but I also think the monsters drop a lot more money than last time, especially the zu by Mysidia.
Lunar Trials = 16bit via infinito. <3 Kain's ultimate weapon is delightfully overpowered. 1/17/2006 8:09:21 PM |

I never had to level up until I reached the moon.

The first time I went through I messed up the Barnabas Z fight by murdering the Doctor too quickly and am missing him in the bestiary. Everyone's level 99 because I did Yang's and Cecil's trials 8 billion times to max out HP with ill gotten apples.
The second time I fixed it but missed the Mythril Golem in the Tower of Babel and he is NOT in the Lunar Ruins. I have two sets of adamant armor in this file. It's great for characters like Edge who lose attack power by equipping a hero shield. It's also nice for Rosa because her best equipment doesn't absorb elemental attacks with a hero shield.
Third time through everything is perfect. :3 1/17/2006 8:56:53 PM |
