Every year my family (including extended family like aunts, uncles, first cousins...) draw names since the family has grown so much. I drew my 11-year old cousin. She is a sporty girl, who plays basketball and soccer. She also likes art and drawing. She's laid back and nothing like her "princess" sister. I want to do something neat and creative for her gift, but I don't want it to be too childish. Any $25ish gift ideas would be great! 12/15/2005 9:58:20 PM |

If she's artsy, a sketch pad and drawing pencils is a thoughtful gift.
Or an arrangement of things, like water color pencils and oil pastels and a small canvas/pad .. if you go w/ oilpastels, include a small bottle of linseed oil or something, its fairly inexpensive. 12/15/2005 10:03:29 PM |

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is good. There are quite a few different series of books that seem popular right now, and I agree that's a good idea. Just make sure you get her 1, 2, and 3, and don't jump around. I used to hate getting books out of order in a series. 12/16/2005 9:33:43 AM |

My sister is 11 and kind of a tomboy. This year I got her one of those hovering things that you shoot with an infared gun to keep it flying. Last year I got her a big box of K'Nex stuff and even though most of the pieces are flung randomly throughout the house, she still plays with it. 12/16/2005 9:46:59 AM |

The art supplies are a great idea...maybe find out from her parents what she needs (or wants). I was also the artsy-sporty kid, and it was always nice to get some new supplies (a couple tubes of watercolor colors I didn't have, or needed more of, a new brush, nice erasers, new sketchpad, etc). As for her sporty side...any local college/semi-pro/pro teams that she likes (think tix to a game)? Does she need a new soccer ball or basketball ball? I think its a little easier to be creative with her artsy side b/c there are so many more possibilities to consider. 12/16/2005 11:18:20 AM |

You could also if she's into it, get her like a shirt with her favorite team logo on it. Way easier than shopping for girly clothes.
If she likes art and drawing, seriously, ask what she wants/needs and get her supplies. If she's good, get her nice ones. those things are hard to afford when you're 11 (or 21 and in college and still broke) 12/16/2005 11:21:28 AM |

yeah i always liked art supplies too but i liked the ones that looked more like grown up art supplies as opposed to the crayola yellow box of water color kind of set. 12/16/2005 11:55:05 AM |
