I have a 96. (For sale BTW) Get a 96-99 All of these will have the Vortec motor(265 hp). Common problems are:Fuel pump, Intake gaskets, Tie rod ends/pitman arm and A/C compressors. All at least $500 or better fixes. I have had mine for 3 years and have had pretty good service from it. It has been reliable but the mileage could be a little better IMO. I get about 12-14 around town and 17-21 on a trip. If your looking to get one do yourself a big favor and check for records and deff take it to someone who can really give it a through inspection. I Really enjoy mine but I have 3 cars and fleet maintence is killing me so the one that isnt paid for has to go. Good luck with your search

I was considering one of these and wondered about that.

I have an F-150 now and can't get up to the 20 MPG mark so that is good news. A friend of mine has a '98 Z71 Silverado and he gets in the single digits while driving in the city.

I do mostly city driving so yeah 12 mpg isnt that great, real good for a 4wd suv but still 12mpg. Sparky $6500 is the asking price. 255 or 265 What does 10 hp really matter.

you people need some dodges. with 33's (dunno about stock size, it was stock for 2 days) i could bring down 23-24 mpg on the highway if i drove with some sense. 15-16 around town no problem. ex gf's 360 durango will do the same around town, but only 18-20 highway. previous carb'd trucks were a different story...

my dad's 94 5.9 ram 4wd short bed standard cab with 33's got 12mpg no matter what kinda driving you did, and my mom's '00 durango 5.2 ate gas like it was its job and didnt have enough power to spin tires on a wet road

btw, my '01 siverado 5.3 gets 13.5 on the highway, 9 around town

^^not that i really value your opinion on anything judging from your posts here, but i'll respond anyway... i have first hand experience with 4-5 4wd 94-01 1500 rams that get better mileage than that, but less than mine. not to mention out of all the dodge boards i'm on, i've maybe heard of a handful getting mileage that bad. many of those were a result of the dreaded "dealer death flash".

i attribute mine being a bit higher than most to being a base model 5 speed. as for power, i'd be happy to post vids of my truck doing doughnuts on 38's and the durango roasting the piss out of 31's... dry pavement (they've been posted before, a search should bring them up).

i'd say you don't know what you're talking about, or you/your family has managed to screw both of them up somehow using the practices you post around here.

don't forget alternators and eating the hell out of brake pads (especially the heavier 4 doors and suburbans).

i second the brake pads, i get about 15-17k on ceramics,

and no, the durango was new and traded it in with about 20k miles because it was a pos and was back at the dealer under warranty 4 times for transmission problems, and you probably put a lot of highway miles on that ram, this one saw 200,000 miles of farm use and trips of maybe 20 miles tops.

yeah, it's been all over up and down the east coast and all around the deep/middle south, but mainly in town miles. that's why i discerned between highway and city mileage. hell, even delivering pizzas (stop and go in neighborhoods) with it on 40's i never got worse than 12. neither did 2 other guys i delivered with that had rams on 35's.
