"Ranking House Judiciary Democrat Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) has introduced a motion to censure President Bush and Vice President Cheney for providing misleading information to Congress in advance of the Iraq war, failing to respond to written questions and potential violations of international law, RAW STORY has learned.

The resolutions were quietly introduced Sunday evening along with a third resolution (HR 635) to create a Select Committee to investigate the administration’s intent to go to war prior to congressional authorization. The committee would also be charged with examining manipulation of pre-war intelligence, thwarting Congressional oversight and retaliatory attacks against critics. As part of this resolution, House Judiciary Democrats seek also to explore violations of international law as pertaining to detainee abuse and torture of prisoners of war.

RAW STORY acquired copies of the resolutions Tuesday. To view the resolution to create investigative body to determine if offenses are impeachable, click here; the resolution to censure President George W. Bush, click here; and the resolution to censure Vice President Dick Cheney, click here.

The Select Committee seeks to subpoena the President and other members of the administration in hopes of ascertaining if impeachable offenses have been committed. Sources close to the Judiciary Committee indicate they believe this is the only avenue left after having written repeated letters requesting answers on matters ranging from the Downing Street Memos to the outing of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson. HR 635, which would create the select committee, could potentially recommend articles of impeachment against both the President and Vice President.

Republicans are not expected to support a Select Committee, nor are they expected to approve censure motions.

House Resolution 636 seeks to censure the President for failing to respond to repeated requests for information on pre-war intelligence, possible war crimes against detainees and violation of international law, and retaliatory action against critics of the administration. House Resolution 637 seeks censure the Vice President for the same alleged abuses of power and failure to respond to repeated requests for information and testimony.

A resolution of censure or a motion of censure is a formal congressional rebuke."

As nothing should. If they censure the president, then so should kerry and the other senate democrats (esp those on the intelligence committee) for the same thing.

christ.

Bush at least deserves an investigation (which is what they want to do), and see if he really warrants a censure (for fabricating intel, or whatever). After what Clinton went through, it's the least they can do.

Clinton actually lied. There is no proof that Bush was even close to lying. And if he is censured, then Bill should be censured all over again for bombing Iraq using the same intel.

And to prove that Bush did lie, please supply more than a salisburyboy thread.

Hence the need for an investigation. You do realize that he's never been under oath during his tenure in office, don't you?

This is not going to get anywhere, but if it leads to Bush's ass being put on the stand so much the better.

^^^ Clinton was put in a position to lie, because he was investigated for a blow job. Bush hasn't had his chance yet to legally lie. There's no "blue dress" now, but there won't be unless there is an investigation. There's plenty of circumstantial evidence that he meant to be misleading, between the stuff Powell's aides have said, the Downing St. Memos, and common sense.

^^ That's one aspect true, but it also shows the Republican's willingness to give their guy a pass on what could be a MUCH more serious crime.

Come on, do you really think they show senators the same and all the information that they show the President?

This administration took advantage of American's fear of future attacks and ran with it (Chicken Little effect). Whether they did it in good faith makes a huge difference and should be investigated.

I absolutely love how bitter and hate-filled Democrats are. Democrats think that if they just yell a little louder, if they just talk a little nastier, if they just spit a little more on our troops, that people will "come around" and it will be Vietnam and Watergate all over again.

Newsflash: Democrats are in the minority. AND, as long as your tactics are simply obstruction and mud slinging, you will remain in the minority. I will grant you that there are a bunch of people in this country that are stupid enough to believe your crap, but those people are so stupid they can't find their way to the polls. That is why you have to vote for them...I guess.

Because the Rove tactics of smear and destroy those who question are really helping the White House and keeping the country together

Look at Bush's polls. Either there are a whole lot of liberals or Republicans are disheartened as well.

God, how in the fuck do you people get to college?

Clinton acted on the intelligence that (prior to his strikes) the areas designated for bombing had some WMD related things.

Maybe he was actually right AND the strikes did a good job.

Or may be not. At any case, that was a different situation that arose in response to a different intel.

You should be. Your only hope is a nation full of idiots.
