imo, there arent enough channels in HD for me to justify spending a couple grand on a new tv. give it a few years, and there will be many more channels, and cheaper hd tvs.

yes you need an hdtv tuner. most of the smaller hdtv's do not have a built-in tuner

I have a 22 inch Tau flat standard definition tv and a Syntax 32" HD LCD-TV. Standard definition television looks somewhat better on the tube tv, but dvd's look significantly better on the HDTV. smaller black bars are also nice since HD aspect ratio is closer to cinematic widescreen. Overall the slightly worse NTSC picture (it is being blown up over alot more real-estate) is a fine trade off for a bigger, lighter, brighter, and better tv that gives me astounding dvd quality and doubles as a huge-ass monitor.

IMO, EDTV > HDTV (http://www.projectorcentral.com/video_signals.htm)

both are in the tier of HD realm, but the quality difference of EDTV (480i/p) and HDTV(720+) is not worth the price difference ($500-1000). EDTVs can receive all HD signals, although any above 480i/p will be compressed. Also, I believe most DVD players by default utilize 480i/p, so EDTVs would have the advantage here since it's naturally fit, whereas HDTVs would have to expand the image. But like someone said...

Unless you know you are capable of receiving an HD signal of channels YOU WANT, getting an ED/HD-TV will essentially equate to getting a normal TV, although it will make your DVDs look very nice. BTW you also need component cables (Y/Pr/Pb) or better (HDMI or DVI) for a solid HD signal. Avoid composite cables (S-Video, R/W/Y, or coaxial) if you can help it.

Of more importance is deciding between Plasma vs. LCD...

i have a 47" panasonic widescreen hdtv and dvds, hd cable/dvr, x360, xbox, and gamecube are all incredible...i can't hardly watch regular tv anymore...

it's worth it if you watch a lot of tv or movies

you obviously have never experienced anything in HD (720p or higher) or you wouldn't have said that...but its cool, if you wasted your money on an EDtv and want to justify it, we'll play along.

Shit, it ain't like they run a few grand anymore. I've been saving up for about a 32"-34" widescreen HD-TV. They run from 700 to a grand for an HD set in this size range. I will hopefully have it by the end of next month. I can hardly wait to get the HD box and setup from Dish sent in and hook that bitch up for my X-Box (and hopefully soon, my 360)

Except you can get several good quality 42" HD Plasma Sets in the 12-1800 range, same price range as any decent ED display.

The whole argument about 'lack of HD programming' is really bogus now. Most all the major networks air almost every one of their evening programs in high def. I would say that of all my television watching in a week, if it is NOT in high definition, then its the minority. I probably watch 12 hours a week when reruns are not on.

ETV is going nowhere. I was an early adopter of HDTV (had it for over 5 years). To this day, I still do not like the plasma or LCD displays. I have a 65" rear projection Mitsu now that is a beautiful display, and would only upgrade to DLP at this point. The cost/benefit ratio for everything else just isnt there for my own perspective. However, HDTV is here to stay.

I dont run 4:3 in 4:3 mode. I always view it widescreen. You get used to it. Thats why a DLP would be nice. No burn in. LCD has no burn in, but most displays have an awful screen door effect (which I hate above all else).

Of those with Time Warner HD boxes...what model do you have? I just picked up the SA Explorer 3100HD a couple days ago. From what I have read, this is an ancient POS. It only has component outs and supposedly they are locked at 1080i. I have a DLP 720p native, so Id like to be able to get a box with DVI/HDMI and the ability to set the res at 720.

Can I call and request a more recent box? Anything specific?

hdtv is worth definitely worth it. I have a 56" Samsung dlp...I hate watching anything but hdtv programing now. You won't regret it.

If you are close enough to a 720p display to be angered by SDE you got more issues then just perfect focus of a defined pixel source.

with most of the twc boxes you can press the Settings button, then A for More Settings and scroll down and change the accepted resolutions for your tv

I have the explorer 8300 HD DVR. Has support for 1080i, 720p. Recording in HiDef isnt something the Satelliter's can do cheaper (one of the reasons I left DirecTV). I highly recommending getting the DVR capability.
