I need to do some exhaust work near the cat on me vw. However, i am no small guy, and getting to it is all but imposssible with ramps or my jackstands. Anyone know of a safe way to get the car up in the air. i was thinking block under the farme or some such thing, but wasn't sure if there was a better way.

bigger jackstands.

or build stands for your jackstands.

or use cinder blocks under jackstands if you dont fear death.

yeah - too much fear of death to try blocks under the jackstands... bigger jackstands are an idea, the ones i have are kinda small

ive used bricks and 2x4s before.

sometimes bricks crack, and usually the jackstand sinks into the 2x4 some.

both make for a jumpy afternoon.

What do you need to do?

I usually don't have too much trouble getting under a car when both ends are up on stands and ramps.

just need to replace an exhaust pipe. Unfortunately, my stomach seems to be preventing me from getting under there comfortably. Thats why i was going for some more height. It could be that i just need some full-size jack stands. The ones i have are pretty damn short.

i have some craftsman ones that are like 6 ton, they have a max lift of maybe 24" i think they were around $30

harbor freight has some similar size, slightly less lift, price varies according to sales.

i have a pair of jackstands that are fairly big. you're welcome to borrow them if you'd like.

max height ~20"
or you can pick up a pair from sears for like $25. 3.5 ton capacity

thanks beethead for the offer.

Looks like i need t oo buy some decent-sized jack stands. I just measured the ones i have i have and they are only 15" fully extended. That could be part of the problem.

Thanks for the info everyone!

Ramps worked great on my '82 Malibu, but that thing had a high bumper and generally sat high up. I don't know that I could get my Lincoln up onto them, what with the long nose and the lower ride height, and I imagine they'd be nearly impossible for anything low and sporty.

Just go down Davis Drive going about 110 and hit the bump at Morrisville Carpenter rd. You'll get your car in the air.

Big jack stands were definitely the answer...
