^skokiaan is right though. Why would you even want a program that solves them? That pretty much defeats the purpose. I can see where actually writing the program would be fulfilling but certainly not just punching some numbers into a program and hitting "go".

yeah the enjoy ment is to solve them, maybe if they were homework and you hated them then a solving program would be good....but seeing how they are puzzles for fun whats the point.

i think the fact that skokiaan feels the need to malign people is pathetic, and there was no reason to be rude. if he said something like that to my face I'd knock him out.

I offered a way to solve puzzles that you hadn't been able to, or perhaps couldn't.

If you're so singleminded and retarded that you couldn't see a use in having something like this, oh well. It takes all kinds of people to make the world work. though we could use a few less of him

and how is he "right"? all he stated is that google exists (oh...wow....) and that the programs exist already (my life involves things besides the puzzles I use to pass a few minutes of time, so I haven't wasted time researching the topis) - and how do those two points correlate to the fact that solving these is fun?

if you're going to make a point make a point, I'm all for other opinions. I just don't like offering something and then being made fun of. that type of shit is what middle schoolers do.

Sodoku puzzles are way too easy. There is a simple algorithm to solve even the hardest ones. It doesn't even test logic--really just tests your memory.

Just write out every possible number in every square, start with the square that has only one possibility and go from there... done

The only challenge comes if you don't allow yourself to write notes. Then it becomes a memory test.

there are much better logic puzzle magazines that actually tests your logic skills.

^^Interesting, but..The same algorithm applies. The total brainless way to do this is just write the number 1-15 for each square, then scratch out the numbers that aren't possibilities. There will be at least one square with only one possibility. After you fill that in, scratch out that number from the corresponding rows/columns/blocks. Then there will be at least one square with only one possibility, fill that in and scratch out etc... Keep going and you'll be done.

What makes one puzzle harder than another is if there is only one possibility at each step, then that is the hardest.

There are ways you can speed this up, of course. that is where it test your memory.

The real challenge is if you don't allow notes. But then it's all about memory, guess-and-check, and a little luck(to solve the problem in a reasonable amount of time).

If you think that then you obviously haven't played enough of the "Evil" level sudokus on websudoku.

It's not nearly as "brainless" as you are trying to make it seem. Yes there are algorithms that will help you to reduce the possibilities, but unless you are playing on the easier levels it's very rarely as simple as there always being one possibility available. There are various techniques that you must learn and put to use or you will never solve some of the more difficult sudokus. Obviously everything can be broken down into a set of rules, otherwise there wouldn't be a way to write programs to solve them, but being able to do those in your head is a pretty far leap from "total[ly] brainless" if you ask me.

look at the link you posted. under the puzzle read the links to "Solution methods"

the case I was talking about is purely the SiSo method--but I had combined the others in my head. I never really tried to write out the algorithm, so I guess I was incomplete.

If you find, like you said, that there does not exist one square with only one possibility after you cross out all impossibilities, then there is an easy way around that (SC,SB,DC). I thought this was trivial, and didn't even mention it.

Still, my point stands. This puzzle is not a test of logic. EVERY sodoku is solvable via a simple algorithm. Just consumes time and barley makes me think. Maybe this is not the case for you.

In a test of logic you would have to put a sentence into symbols and use modus ponens/tollens etc...

I never argued with your use of the word "logic". Have fun arguing your semantics all day for all I care. I just took mild offence to the "total brainless" part.

I know I use more of my brain playing sudoku than I would playing minesweeper or solitaire. Those games I'd call "brainless".

Either way, I find sudoku a fairly fun way to pass the time at work, and I feel like I'm giving my brain more of a workout than if I were to be playing solitaire.
