So the last of my parts should come in tomorrow and I can finally start assembling my new computer. The only thing staying from my old computer are the hard drives.

My question is... what kind of procedure should I follow?? Do I just put it all together and then start installing drivers and such? Or is there some kind of method I am supposed to follow? Any advice would be great.

usually the motherboard goes in first, then the rest gets pounded in with a sledgehammer.

but make sure it's a rubber sledgehammer so you don't get any static discharge.

see that's one of the things i was wondering... you need to reinstall windows?

the rest of you were no help... i know how to put it together. i was just asking mainly in terms of what i need to redo with software

It's always better to reinstall windows unless you want to sit there for hours figuring small things out. It's always a good idea to have 2 harddrives. Backup all your important stuff to one drive...

Then replace the hardware and use the drive that has no backup as the primary when you install. I don't even put in the other drive until the computer is up and working. You don't have to but it just became habit. Less clutter.

I format the drive, install the OS, install all the necessary drivers, and a few programs. Then I shut her down, put in the other drive, then boot back up and move all the important stuff back over.

yeah, you will need to reinstall windows... (he's changing motherboards and processors)
first thing after install of windows
install mobo drivers and such
restart
vid card
restart
then whatever really, probably internet if it wasnt included in the motherboard drivers


yeah 2 HD's speed things up ALOT....

he doesnt have to reinstall windows.

he should because trying to walk someone through the process of sysprep is much more time consuming than just reformatting, but he definitely doesnt have to.

i was going to say, shouldn't he just be able to do a windows repair, so long as he's downloaded necessary drivers beforehand?

i was thinking of following your steps Arab13, but the mobo doesn't have onboard video... so does that mean I can just put it all in at once?

thanks for the advice on the HD's. i have 3 of them, so formatting one is no big deal. i SHOULD have had my stuff today, but the stupid apartment office closed before they were supposed to (effectively screwing me over until tomorrow)

i think he meant you put everything together beforehand, but install mobo drivers, reboot, install video DRIVERS, reboot, etc.
