I figured it would only be a matter of time before this happened....

Quote :
"Congratulations to Mack Brown and the Longhorns

Former Tar Heel Coach Wins Football Title

Mack Brown led UNC to 69 wins in 10 years as head coach.

Jan. 5, 2006

It's somewhat ironic, and certainly fitting, that Mack Brown led the University of Texas to the 2005 college football national championship by beating the USC Trojans in a Rose Bowl classic. After all, it was a 1993 win over the Trojans that was arguably the signature triumph of Mack's 10-year career as head coach of the Tar Heels.

Carolina whipped the Trojans, 31-9, in the Disneyland Pigskin Classic, right in USC's backyard behind the option genius of junior quarterback Jason Stanicek. That win, on a national television stage to kick off the season, came on the heels of an exhilarating Peach Bowl win over Mississippi State and signaled the return to the national spotlight for Carolina football.

On behalf of the University of North Carolina, congratulations to Mack and the Texas Longhorns for winning one of the most memorable national title games ever played and reigning supreme as the 2005 national champions.

Mack came to Carolina in December 1987 and led the Tar Heels to 69 wins in 10 seasons, including eight winning records in a row, six bowl appearances, four postseason wins and Top 10 national finishes in 1996 and 1997. He is the second-winningest coach in Carolina football history and has continued that success in Austin.

Congratulations also go out to former UNC offensive coordinator Greg Davis, and Tar Heel staffers Jeff Madden, Cleve Bryant, Jean Bryant and Brian Davis, all current members of the Longhorn family.

Greg Davis oversaw the Tar Heel offense that averaged 30.6 and 27.8 points per game in 1996-97 and has developed Longhorn quarterback Vince Young into one of the most remarkable offensive talents the game has ever seen. So hats off to Mack and the Longhorns.

NCAA's two most prominent national champion coaches -Roy Williams and Mack Brown - now both have special ties to Chapel Hill. They're two guys with a lot in common. Both have been successful at two schools and went through the emotional turmoil of moving on from a place they loved dearly. Both were very successful coaches who won their first national championship after years of competing with previous great teams. And both are classy guys who run first-rate programs on and off the field, recruit good kids and emphasize family and academics.

For that, everyone at Carolina should be extremely proud!

"

Um, what is the problem. Everything in there is true. I'd hope that a NC State writer would do the same if Amato or Herb went on to other places.

Notice they drew the same parallel b/t Roy and Mack (one at Kansas; one at UNC).

but I also don't remember any articles like that about Norm Chow. I mean he was offensive coordinator here before he went to USC and they won 2 national championships in a row.

by the end of the article you would have thought that Mack Brown had on baby blue boxers during the game last night, and gave all the glory to his UNC "roots".

It is sheer arrogance. Of course, I expect nothing more of them.... I would say I would expect less, but since it is pretty low to try and glean glory off a coach who has been gone from your school for more than 8 years....

It would be the equivalent of NC State trying to take glory from Lou Holtz after he left NC State and went on to other schools.

This is just another cheap attempt to recruit off of another coaches glory.

[Edited on January 5, 2006 at 4:35 PM. Reason : Woodfoot can't read the last two paragraphs where UNC ties themselves to Texas....]

Pete Carroll coached at NCSU so do we get credit for the "ThreePeat" and "greatest team in college football history"?

We at least gotta have a parade.

Wait that never happens.

The fact that 98% of UNC fans were pulling against Texas because of Mack Brown is why that article is bullshit.

^^^^^not exactly.... Read the article twice. It's as if Mack Brown was talking to John Bunting on his headset during the game, and Bunting called the plays that won. The connection that they make calling Roy Williams and Mack Brown the "two most prominent national champion coaches" is a bit of a stretch as well. I would say that Bobby Bowden (2 National Championships) and Coach K (3 National Championships) are much more prominent than Brown (1 National Championship) and Williams (1 National Championship)....

Well damn, NC State is a national Powerhouse

Lou Holtz
Monte Kiffin (Bucs)
Pete Carroll
Bill Cowher

That's 3 National Championships and a Super Bowl

Quote :
"why did he leave UNC?"

Because it's UNC(A basketball school) and they're Texas (A powerhouse in the middle of a ridiculously talented high school football area)....?

And they paid him about eleventy times as much

You didn't see NC State saying congrats to Pete Carroll last year, and saying that "All NC State fans should celebrate and be proud" or something like that. It's sheer Carolina arrogance that allows them to think that all greatness spawned from their campus.

Woodfoot, what did I ever do to you? It's not like I pulled this notion out of the air. UNC posted this article on their website, and it was subsequently picked up by theacc.com. I didn't put this out there, I just thought it needed to be brought to the attention of Tdub.... I'm sorry if my threads don't amuse you.

my buddy from UNC was pulling for Texas, but just because he, like many others, was sick of USC...course he still doesnt like Mack Brown...according to him, if they still had Mack Brown, State would've beaten them for 10 straight years

^ Good call on the coaches.

Aha, they day they applaud Willie Parker's accomplishments will just take the cake.

i don't particularly agree with the athletic department sanctioning something like that, but the fact is mack brown brought us basically the greatest 2 years in our history, and its close enough where fans haven't forgotten. i admit its kinda tacky, but its also not the glory hogging yall are trying to make it out to be

it is when they continuously do shit like that just to gain attention. Mack Brown is no longer at UNC for a reason...get over it

just like its been said over and over in this thread, we have enough class not to go around doing that everytime one of our former coaches wins something. It's just arrogance that makes UNC fans do shit like that and thats why I hate them.

^^ i remeber one of their coaches saying "I don't give a shit about UNC" ...was it Roy or Matt?? ... anyway I agree

norm chow brought NCSU the same, hell brought us out of a hole in football and made PR one of the best QB's we have ever seen

but NCSU is not having a parade or making a biography or declaring this day to be national norm chow day...no, we didnt do that, this is glory hogging...Pete coached here, lets make big news out of that, we didnt and we shouldnt, hes not a coach here anymore.

lets even say that John Edwards became VP....UNC would have rolled over in a huge homo celebration had he started off at their school and been VP, they would have dedicated a building prolly. we just said ehh, screw him, he left...and we booed him at the game he attended...mack brown would prolly get applauded now at a UNC game, those guys are more hypocritical than a bi polar.

I wasn't really pulling for either team. I felt no attachment or disdain for either coach or either team. I wanted to see Reggie Bush play well, and Vince Young do well as well.
