After the Colbert Report invented the word "truthiness" in its first broadcast, NCSU proffesor M. Adams is put on notice by the Colbert Report.
Linguists Vote 'Truthiness' Word of 2005
Quote : | "A panel of linguists has decided the word that best reflects 2005 is "truthiness," defined as the quality of stating concepts one wishes or believes to be true, rather than the facts.
The American Dialect Society chose the word Friday after a runoff with terms related to Hurricane Katrina, such as "Katrinagate," the scandal erupting from the lack of planning for the monster hurricane.
Michael Adams, a professor at North Carolina State University who specializes in lexicology, said "truthiness" means "truthy, not facty."
"The national argument right now is, one, who's got the truth and, two, who's got the facts," he said. "Until we can manage to get the two of them back together again, we're not going make much progress."
The group of linguists, editors and academics agreed the most useful word was "podcast" — a digital feed containing audio or video files for downloading to an MP3 player.
In a runoff for the most creative word, "whale tail," the appearance of a thong above the waistband, beat out "muffin top," the bulge of flesh hanging over the top of low-riding jeans.
Tom Cruise became the first public figure in the contest's 16 years to be noted for his influence on public discourse. The group coined the term "Cruiselex" to describe such terms as "jump the couch" and "Cruisazy."
"Jump the couch," meaning to exhibit strange or frenetic behavior, won the best Tom Cruise-related word or phrase. It stems from the actor's antics in May on Oprah Winfrey's couch as he talked about his love for fiancee Katie Holmes. "Cruisazy" means to exhibit crazy behavior.
"I don't know any other public figure who has inspired so many words in a single year," said Erin McKean, editor of the New Oxford American Dictionary.
Other winners included "sudoku," a Japanese number puzzle voted the word most likely to succeed, and "pope squatting," the practice of registering an online domain that is the name of the new pope in order to profit from it, as least likely to succeed.
Last year's overall winner was "red, blue and purple states." In the 2004 general election, voters in red states favored Republicans, those in blue states favored Democrats and residents of purple states were undecided." |
The ivory tower elite bastard wont get off his high horse and defend himself. No where is credit given to Colbert. Colbert devoted an entire segment of his show to him. Thnx for giving Tompkins hall a shout out on national tv though, Mr Colbert.

Colbert puts professor 'on notice'
Michael Adams, featured in a recent Associated Press article, incurs the wrath of Comedy Central 'pundit'
By Emily Kiser Issue date: 1/11/06 Section: News
"The Colbert Report" host Stephen Colbert officially placed Michael Adams, an N.C. State professor specializing in lexicology, on his "On Notice" board during his show Monday night for defining the word of the year, "truthiness," as "truthy, not facty" in an Associated Press article.
"Truthiness" was Colbert's word of the day in the first episode of the show, when he claims he created the word.
"You see, the Associated Press article announcing this prestigious award, written by one Heather Clark, had a glaring omission: me," Colbert said during his show Monday. "I'm not mentioned, despite the fact that truthiness is a word I pulled right out of my keister."
Adams, however, said that Colbert didn't invent the word.
"First of all, 'truthiness' was already a word ? it's in the Oxford English Dictionary, so his claim that he invented it is a little untrue," Adams said. "But the meaning in the OED is not the same as the one he gives. I mean, how can we complain about him being angry about coining a word that he didn't really coin but that he believes he coined?"
Colbert, proving he did his research, addressed Adams.
"First of all, I looked him up. He's not a professor, he's a visiting associate professor," Colbert said. "And second, it means a lot more than that, Michael. I don't know what you're getting taught over there in English 201 and 324 over at Tompkins Hall, Wolfpack. But it isn't truthiness."
Colbert then brought out his "On Notice" board, where there were entries like, "grizzly bears," "Black hole at center of galaxy" and "Barbra Streisand."
"Visiting associate professor Michael Adams: you, sir, are on notice," Colbert said. He puts Adams' name on the board after making room by removing the "E Street Band."
"OK, there it is. Deal with it," he said.
Sophomore Lara Anderson, majoring in zoology, said she saw the N.C. State logo appear on television and said she was surprised that the show was addressing the University.
"I think it makes our school look like we're not very competent," Anderson said. "And now I think it's another reason for UNC students to make fun of us."
Adams said he can't think of any greater honor than to be placed on Colbert's "On Notice" board. He also said that he owes Colbert thanks.
"It was absolutely hilarious and I'd probably say thank you more than anything else, not just on behalf of me, but of the American Dialect Society as well," Adams said.
Adams said he probably wouldn't be responding to Colbert anytime soon.
"I think responding to him would be about as profitable as responding to Bill O'Reilly -- I think it would be a big mistake and I don't want to get sucked into that," he said with a laugh.
Adams said that when a word is successful and people start to use it, lexicographers examine how the word is used and define it. Walt Wolfram, English department head and former president of the American Dialect Society, said he agrees with Adams.
"The Colbert Report says, 'We coined the word so we define it,'" Wolfram said. "Lexicographers define words, not 'The Colbert Report.'"" |

It's taken me a while to warm up to the Colbert Report to be honest. I can't quite figure out why, yet. I'm getting more used to his O'Reilly (which has gotten better as the show's progressed), but still wish he could go one episode without stuttering at least once.
I mean...c'mon. If Jon Stewart can do it as fast as he talks during his show, surely the truthy French guy can, too. 1/13/2006 10:54:14 AM |
agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
^ the problem is Jon is being himself and saying what he wants to say, so it comes out naturally. Since Colbert is playing a character, he has to stay in character the whole show by reading lines and putting on a different personality. Much harder to do I think, but he is getting better and the show is still picking up steam. I thought it started good, then it would fizzle, but luckily, the opposite's happened.
but anyway - i'm disappointed at the lost opportunities for the media (and Colbert) to use the word truthiness in their coverage of this story! 1/13/2006 11:05:03 AM |
