Bruce Sutter got in today but I thought it was funny when I looked at the final results:

Quote :
"x-Bruce Sutter 400 (76.9%), Jim Rice 337 (64.8%), Rich "Goose" Gossage 336 (64.6%), Andre Dawson 317 (61.0%), Bert Blyleven 277 (53.3%), Lee Smith 234 (45.0%), Jack Morris 214 (41.2%), Tommy John 154 (29.6%), Steve Garvey 135 (26.0%), Alan Trammell 92 (17.7%), Dave Parker 76 (14.4%), Dave Concepcion 65 (12.5%), Don Mattingly 64 (12.3%), Orel Hershiser 58 (11.2%), Dale Murphy 56 (10.8%), Albert Belle 40 (7.7%).

By receiving fewer than 26 votes (less than 5 percent), Will Clark 23 (4.4%), Dwight Gooden 17 (3.3%), Willie McGee 12 (2.3%), Hal Morris 5 (1.0%), Ozzie Guillen 5 (1.0%), Gary Gaetti 4 (0.8%), John Wetteland 4 (0.8%), Rick Aguilera 3 (0.6%), Doug Jones 2 (0.2%), Greg Jefferies 2 (0.4%), Walt Weiss 1 (0.2%), Gary DiSarcina 0 (0.0%), Alex Fernandez 0 (0.0%) are no longer eligible for election by the BBWAA.
"

Who the hell voted for Walt Weiss??? Revoke that man's vote. Also what was Alex Fernandez even doing on the ballot??

What about Ozzie Guillen??? Isn't he still managing? What is the waiting period for managers....

^^ I feel the same way, but Murph's got no chance to be elected by the writers. I thought he'd be a shoe in when he retired, but I guess all those horrible Braves teams he played on and not getting to 400 HRs really hurt his standing.

^^ This is as a player. Once Ozzie retires as a manager, then he could be elected.

but he has 5 votes in the balloting.... Does the waiting period not start after he retires? How can you already have votes if you haven't reached the required waiting period.

I really wish Will Clark could make it, but it is all about the numbers these days and being one of the best hitters in the league for 10 years apparently doesn't mean shit.

^^ I assume he has been retired long enough as a player to be eligible. Next year Tony Gwynn, McSteroid, and Ripken Jr all are on the ballot. That is a banner class, but it'll be interesting to see if McGwire will get any support.

Ozzie has no chance to make it as a player. aside from being playing in several All-Star games, being the Rookie of the Year and being one hell of a defensive shortstop, his plate performace was subpar.

he is, and always will be, my favorite baseball player of all time (if you could only see my collection of Ozzie cards, Starting Lineups, Pepsi cans, autographs, etc)....but getting seriously injured during his prime ruined his chances of getting in the Hall as a player

BUT IT STILL IS MY GOAL TO SEE HIM INDUCTED. whether as a player or a manager.

recall that he was a coach for the World Champion Marlins and now the Manager of the Year and manager of the Champion '05 White Sox. one or two more titles and he's a shoe-in

I thought he'd have a better percentage of votes this year because of who else was on the ballot.

For the first time since 2000, when he was named on 23.25 percent of the ballots, Murphy saw his voting percentage increase last year, from 8.5 to 10.46. Had he been named on less than five percent of the ballots, he would have been removed from the ballot.

Roger Maris and the Murph are the only players to win back to back MVPs that aren't in the HOF.

I'd wager that Pete will have to wait a while longer. Odds are he won't be in the hall for a few years.

Now that Sutter is in and there is a precident for closers, I wouldn't be shocked to see at least Gossage make it over the hump next season. Lee Smith may see a good boost as well. Rice and Dawson will likely continue to see a slow climb as well as Blyleven but with next years first timers it'll be hard for them to get much attention and they likely will have to wait at least another year.

only Andre Dawson got in this year (78%)

everybody is surprised about Alomar not getting in, first ballot....and Barry Larkin/Bert Blyleven getting snubbed, to an extent

Damn blast from the past with this thread. I still wish Dale Murphy could get in. He deserves it for just being a good human being and basically being the opposite of A-Rod during his day (i.e. not a whiny bitch, no roids, no hookers/strippers/Madonna, etc.).

I thought Robby Alomar and Barry Larkin were locks to get in?

Alomar was the best 2B in baseball for the 1990s

is this larkin's first attempt to get in? He's my all time favorite player.

Shout out to the first (and maybe only) shortstop in the 30-30 club.
