0000 steel wool and gun oil. test it on a small area first, but I have had good luck with this on old guns

wet the 0000 with the oil then gently rub it. go slow, you can scrub the blue off. what kind of shotgun?

a cheap reblue is 100-125, but its like a maaco paint job. if its a double forget it you cant hotblue them due to melting the solder between the barrels. they have to be rust blued, which is the caddilac of blue finishes, but also $texas

its a remington 870, and its really not that old. i take care of it, i clean it and i store it in a protective case in a room temp dry area. the fact that its starting to rust a little pisses me off really. the rust is around the magazine cap and above the trigger near the stock. i bought some crap at walmart that says it takes off rust and im gonna scrub it with the scrubbing metal gun brush.

I don't know that this is the magical cure-all for any type of rust, but I've read somewhere that you should spray the site with some WD-40 and then remove the rust with a steel-wool scrub.

im gonna try the rusty duck stuff and the steel wool brush after i am done shooting this saturday. even if the gun becomes a POS, despite my preventative mantinenece, its no big loss really. just a 200 rem 870 from wal mart.

Shaklee works wonders on rust... not sure how it would work on a shotgun... but it's far less abrasive than steel wool...

if you go shooting in cold weather and come in and don't allow the gun to return to room temp and dry off before putting it in the case, the condesation will cause it to rust.

Your problem is storing it in the case. Put a couple packets of silica gel in there, if you must do it. Otherwise store it with a lock in a closet or something.

yeah, storing one in a case holds moisture. I learned that lesson the hard way.

perhaps i enjoy the opinions and conversation that comes with asking my fellow wolf web gun friends instead of google. so storing in a case is bad huh. damn. well heres another question. i keep my pistols in a normal fire proof safe, some inside a holster. is storing that way ok? i have never had rust on my pistols and i have had them longer

dunno, but get those things that remove water in the air (looks like a 2 chamber transulcent oval container with granules on the top and a chamber on the bottom) and stick them in your safe and a couple big packets of silica gel in the cases like hkrock said.

I think I read some where that white vinegar helps with rust. it's cheap and worth a try.
